For some kids, their curiosity for climbing begins on a tree in the backyard. For others, it's conquering the monkey bars at the park or scrambling up the furniture they're constantly being told not to climb on. What often starts as a fun challenge can become an opportunity to build confidence, resilience and problem-solving skills.
For over 30 years, IBEX Climbing Gym has given children a place to discover those same benefits in a safe, welcoming environment. What began with Chris and Stacy Fairbank’s love of climbing has grown into the Midwest's first and largest climbing gym. Over the years, it has become an energetic community that’s introduced thousands of adults and kids to a sport that challenges both their bodies and minds.
Today, owner Todd Jordan and his son, Tony Jordan, who serves as General Manager, Head Coach and Youth Program Director, continue that mission. Together, they've expanded the gym with new climbing walls and interactive features while creating an environment where beginners and experienced climbers can challenge themselves and have fun.
While every climb looks different and presents its own set of challenges, the lesson is often the same. Success rarely comes on the first try. Instead, young climbers learn to slow down, adjust their movements and try different approaches when something doesn't work. Falling isn't viewed as failure, it’s part of figuring out the next move.
"Kids build problem-solving skills through trial and error," Tony shared. "They learn that they have limits, but those limits aren't permanent.”
For many kids, the process begins with hesitation. A route may feel too steep, too difficult or too unfamiliar. But, with encouragement and a willingness to keep trying, hesitation turns into progress. Moments of being resilient and persistent add up to something bigger. A climb that once felt out of reach is eventually conquered.
For instructors like Tony, watching that transformation is one of the most rewarding parts. "The best part is seeing the smiles," Tony said. "They go from being scared, exhausted or frustrated to smiling and feeling proud because they conquered something they didn't think they could do and trusted you to help them through it."
From first time visitors to kids joining a homeschool program or club climbing, there's an opportunity to learn at every level. "We want everyone to have a place where they feel welcome," Tony says. "Whether it's a father climbing with his kids, someone climbing for the first time or a child who's been climbing for years, we want them to know they have a home here."
While kids may arrive excited to race to the top of the wall, they often leave with something they didn't expect: greater confidence, resilience and the belief that they can do hard things. Sometimes the greatest accomplishment isn't reaching the top of the wall. It's discovering you're capable of climbing higher than you ever imagined.
