Recognizing and Developing Women in Leadership

The ATHENA Leadership Foundation

The ATHENA Leadership Foundation brings into focus outstanding professionals in the community while encouraging leadership opportunities for women of all ages and career stages.

The International ATHENA Leadership Award program was introduced in St. Charles County in 1987. The program supports the development of women in leadership roles. The ATHENA Award was inspired by the goddess of Greek mythology known for her strength, courage, wisdom and enlightenment—qualities embodied in the ATHENA leadership model. The ATHENA mission is to support, honor and develop women leaders and inspire women to reach their full potential. Their philosophy includes these key principles: authentic self, celebration, joy, collaboration, courageous acts, fierce advocacy, giving back, learning, relationships.

In 2014, the ATHENA Mentoring Program was launched. It’s designed for women who have the potential and desire to not only develop their leadership skills but to connect with like-minded women executives to ultimately advance St. Charles County’s effectiveness through business and industry.

The focus of the program is transformational leadership, which is positive, empowering and focused on developing the followers.

The program includes monthly one-on-one coaching with a mentor from the ATHENA membership, as well as leadership development group meetings facilitated by an executive coach. Leadership development materials are provided to all participants.
