Some businesses open their doors to fill a gap in the market. Richard Nalder opened Redlan's Gentlemen's Grooming on December 5, 2016, because he believed men deserved better — a grooming experience built around craft, confidence, and genuine connection. The name itself is a signature: Redlan is Nalder spelled backwards.
Nalder brings more than 19 years of industry experience to the chair. Most of his career was spent serving clients in west Boise, Eagle, and the North Meridian area. When it came time to build something of his own, the choice of location was clear. "It only made sense to me to have a shop where most of my customers lived," he says. He wanted to recreate the atmosphere he had experienced working at a men's day spa in downtown Boise. "I missed that atmosphere."
What he and his wife and co-founder Ashley Nalder built together is more than a barbershop. Together, they shaped every detail of the experience — from the services and products to the atmosphere Richard had long envisioned. Redlan's is Eagle's first men's grooming salon — a full-service establishment where traditional barbering and holistic well-being meet. Every service and product has been designed exclusively for men, from precision haircuts and beard trims to the signature straight edge hot shave ritual. The shop carries a curated selection of men's grooming products, from classic pomades to traditional hair gels, and staff take the time to show clients how to use them properly.
"Never go to a barber for just another haircut," Nalder says. "Enjoy all the extra details."
That philosophy has earned Redlan's recognition as Eagle Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year — an award based not on popularity votes, but on community involvement and impact as evaluated by city council members and Chamber officials — along with multiple Neighborhood Favorite awards and a 4.9 Google rating built on 400-plus five-star reviews.
Nalder also coaches salons and barbershops nationally, working with owners and teams on leadership, systems, and culture. He serves as Secretary and Board Member of the Idaho Professional Beauty and Barber Association, where he works to elevate standards across the industry statewide.
Back in Eagle, the shop he describes as having "a small town yet urban feel" draws a loyal clientele of business owners, professionals, fathers, and men in leadership roles — men who value their time and expect a consistent, elevated experience. "My vision for Redlan's is to keep the neighborhood barbershop feel — a hair shop men are not embarrassed to tell their friends about," Nalder says. What he loves most about the work is "changing how people look and making them feel confident in themselves." He describes his craft as "taking old styles and techniques and merging them with new styles and techniques to create styles for new and old generations — creating a modern style from a classic look."
That commitment to the craft, to the client, and to the community defines everything Redlan's does. As Nalder puts it: "More than a haircut. This is the standard."
