In a world where acts of service and patriotism can inspire us all, Aiden Volk, a sophomore at Blue Springs High School, has gone above and beyond to make a meaningful impact in his community. Through his Eagle Scout project, Aiden created a lasting tribute to honor veterans and provide a proper way to retire United States flags.
Inspired by his experiences raising the flag at Brittany Hill Middle School and stories of his grandfather's service in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, Aiden envisioned a way to give back to both his community and his country. With support from Troop 1138 and the Blue Springs Parks and Recreation Department, Aiden brought his vision to life by constructing a US Flag Retirement Drop Box, now proudly installed at Pink Hill Park’s Veterans Way Memorial.
What began as a wooden structure became a handcrafted aluminum box wrapped in a striking design from Royal Signs and Graphics. Aiden’s dedication to detail, countless hours of labor alongside his father, and leadership of his troop during the project’s construction reflect his commitment to honoring the men and women who serve or have served, as well as the flag itself.
Aiden’s box serves a practical and symbolic purpose. It provides the community with a respectful way to retire worn or tattered flags, which Aiden and his troop ceremonially retire at campouts. This heartfelt project, dedicated to his late grandfather, embodies the values of respect, service, and patriotism.
Through his efforts, Aiden has not only achieved a significant milestone in his Scouting journey but he has also created a legacy of respect and service that will inspire others for years to come.
How to Contribute
The community is encouraged to use the drop box at Pink Hill Park at Veterans Way Memorial to retire their flags with honor. This supports Aiden’s effort to ensure these symbols of freedom are treated with the dignity they deserve.
