Ride the Rail.

Offering much more than tasty wine, Villa Milagro is the perfect day-long getaway.

Looking to sip wine in the sprawling hills of California? Well, that’s only a train ride away thanks to Villa Milagro Vineyards. Nestled between New Jersey and Pennsylvania, on the historic Delaware River, are 104 acres of California-inspired vineyards providing a traditional wine tasting experience. Owners Audrey and Steve produce wine and foster experiences that refine the taste buds and enrich the palate. True to its name, Villa Milagro is the place or home of miracles. When you look across the panoramic landscape and sip wine with paired hors d'oeuvres, you will be transported to the hills of Napa Valley. Could the experience possibly get better? Yes—by taking the Winery Train!

The Winery Train by Delaware River Railroad Excursions is a unique, fun, and relaxing day trip. The 90-minute scenic steam engine ride starts from Lehigh Junction Station in old town Phillipsburg, smoothly moving through the beautiful autumn scenes of the Delaware River and passing bucolic farmland and quaint small hamlets. By a passionate and knowledgeable group of volunteers, you’ll be taught the history of the railroad and steam engine. Upon arriving at your destination, you’ll be picked up by a bus and driven up the hill to Villa Milagro. On this shorter ride, owner Steve will share the rich history of the surrounding area and farm.

At the top of the hill, with the lovely vintner’s residence in front of you, you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of four counties in two states, lush and beautiful vineyards, and abundant sunlight. Just imagine the turning leaves and the hills’ deep autumn hues—beautiful! You’ll get a crash course on how Villa Milagro makes its wine and what makes its vineyard the perfect spot to grow grapes. Then, you will sample wines paired with hot hors d’oeuvres before you make your choices of wines to buy. You’ll spend about an hour there, but this is just the right amount of time to enjoy everything the winery offers before boarding the return bus to your train. The all-inclusive wine train experience costs $40 per adult, and given the experience I had, it is well worth it. To make things even better, you can pack your own lunch to enjoy with your wine on the train ride back. How lovely!

If you’re looking for a place to unwind, Villa Milagro is certainly the place for you. You can also drive to the vineyards directly, sit back and enjoy some live music, and treat yourself to a wine tasting of Villa Milagro’s signature wines available on weekends. My favorite, Luz del Sol, a dry Chardonnay blend with hints of tropical fruit. Come experience Villa Milagro. 877trainride.com/winery.htm and villamilagrovineyards.com/home
