Running Toward Confidence

Girls on the Run Georgia Celebrates 25 Years of Empowerment

In a world that often tells young girls who they should be, Girls on the Run Georgia (GOTR) is helping them discover who they truly are. Through the joyful rhythm of running and the power of connection, this heart-driven program has been igniting confidence, resilience, and strength in girls for 25 incredible years.

At its core, Girls on the Run is more than an after-school program. The organization’s mission is beautifully simple yet deeply impactful: to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that integrates running. The vision? A world where every girl knows her limitless potential.

The program runs (pun intended!) in both the spring and fall, and it’s built on more than just miles. Over the course of ten weeks, girls in 3rd through 8th grade meet twice a week to explore important life skills through dynamic lessons paired with physical activity. The season culminates in a celebratory 5K, where girls cross the finish line with not only a medal around their necks but a new understanding of their own strength.

Each lesson -- whether it’s about standing up for yourself, being a good friend, or setting goals -- gives girls tools they’ll carry with them far beyond the program. It’s about more than speed or endurance; it’s about overcoming challenges and learning that they can do hard things.

Locally, Girls on the Run Georgia has left its mark in Smyrna-Vinings for over a decade, partnering with schools like King Springs Elementary, Smyrna Elementary, Teasley Elementary, and Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. And they’re not slowing down. With a focus on expansion and accessibility, the team is working hard to bring the program to even more schools across the area -- ensuring that every girl who wants to participate has the opportunity.

As they celebrate their 25th anniversary, GOTR Georgia is looking back on the journey with pride. Since their founding, they’ve empowered more than 42,000 girls -- each one with her own unique story. To mark this milestone, they’re launching a “25 Days of Girls on the Run Georgia” campaign in April filled with heartfelt stories, volunteer spotlights, and opportunities to get involved. And this fall, they’ll host a special event to keep the celebration going.

For those inspired to get involved, there are many ways to support Girls on the Run. The program relies on a village of volunteers -- from energetic coaches who cheer girls on every step of the way, to office helpers, event supporters, and even board members who help guide the organization’s future. Fundraisers and local partnerships also play a vital role in making the program accessible to all girls, regardless of background or financial barriers.

Perhaps one former participant said it best: “At Girls on the Run, I learned how to be true to myself and how to support others. The connections I made are long-lasting and powerful. The skills I learned are still with me today. And I still use them when I am struggling.”

That’s the essence of Girls on the Run. It’s about more than running -- it’s about becoming. And here in Smyrna-Vinings and beyond, girls are lacing up their sneakers and discovering that the finish line is just the beginning.

“At Girls on the Run, girls do more than cross a finish line -- they discover courage, build lifelong confidence, and learn they are capable of far more than they ever imagined.”

“This program isn’t just about running -- it’s about becoming strong, kind, and resilient. Every lesson helps girls unlock their potential and shine in a world that needs their light.”
