Redefining the Range

Buck & Doe’s Mercantile builds community through education, exceptional service, and a family-friendly atmosphere.

Rex and Jennifer Majors, along with business partner Rick Grayson, opened Buck & Doe’s Mercantile in late 2017 with the goal of creating a safe, family-friendly environment for the Stone Oak community. While they offer a wide variety of products, it is clear their primary goal is to share knowledge through classes, the shooting range, and one-on-one interactions with customers. As Rex told me, “We wanted to start the business to, via education and experience, take the negative connotation away from shooting sports.”

One of the ways Buck & Doe’s Mercantile wants to accomplish that goal is through excellent customer service. They pride themselves on building strong relationships with their clients, so they continue coming back. Their employees are trained to be both knowledgeable and unbiased when helping someone select a product. Rex feels like he is always learning something new from his staff. With some clients being high-profile, every employee respects a no photos policy in the store. Customer privacy is a top priority at Buck & Doe’s. Whether it’s a first-time visitor, a regular customer, or even a well-known guest, the team strives to make everyone feel at ease during their visit.

Jason DeBlasio has always felt well taken care of at Buck & Doe’s. After retiring from the United States Air Force, Jason wanted to find a local shooting range and shop where he could connect with the staff and other customers. He definitely feels like he found that at Buck & Doe’s. Jason describes the staff as always welcoming him with a smile and ready to help with anything he needs. “The team treats you with respect, listens, educates, and always makes you feel like part of the community.”

As a small business owner himself, Jason understands the importance of building personal connections with customers. Jason is the Head of Sales and Customer Success at his company Military Metal Art. Like Jason, many of the artists and employees at Military Metal Art are veterans. Their mission “is to provide veterans with high quality, one-of-a-kind pieces of art that will honor their sacrifices and showcase their patriotism.” Their staff of experienced metal artists make beautiful artwork based on traditional military insignia. Each piece tells a personal story thanks to the connection that the employees at Military Metal Art make with the veterans they are honoring.

The customer base at Buck & Doe’s is another thing that makes Jason want to keep coming back. Many shared tips on the shooting range have created the friendly atmosphere Jason was looking for. He said it feels more like a community than a business. Jason admits he has been known to stop in for a chat, even when he is not shopping for anything in particular. Part of what has helped create a community atmosphere at Buck & Doe’s are their many social events. They host kid’s summer camps, league competitions, fun shoots, private parties, as well as events open to the public.

Buck & Doe’s truly offers something for everyone. The shop carries a wide selection of men’s and women’s clothing, along with stylish apparel and accessories. For those looking to treat themselves or find the perfect gift, there is a curated collection of home goods and unique items you will not find elsewhere. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the full range of essentials for firearms and archery—everything from optics and knives to high-quality accessories. Whether you are a seasoned collector searching for a rare find, a newcomer interested in learning more about shooting, or simply on the hunt for a great gift, Buck & Doe’s has you covered. Jason proudly describes it as a one-stop shop, with a “top-tier” product selection to match.

Because education and experience are so important to them, Buck & Doe’s provides a wide range of classes for people at any stage of experience. Customers can sign up for all levels of handgun and rifle classes, from beginner to advanced. Buck & Doe’s hosts License to Carry classes as well as gun safety and cleaning classes. There are also women’s only classes of all levels taught by female instructors. Those who would rather work individually with an instructor can take private lessons. Their practice range features 18 indoor, air-conditioned, 50-foot shooting lanes, available by reservation or on a walk-in basis.

A unique feature at Buck & Doe’s is its full range of archery services, including classes and access to an on-site range. They have a full-service bow shop with an in-house technician that can restring crossbows, recurve, and compound bows. A wide variety of brands are available in their bow shop, as well as many types of repairs and accessory installations. They offer classes for both recurve and compound bows. Their archery range features targets set at a 20-yard distance, which is adjustable for younger participants or those developing beginner skills. There are membership and non-member prices available for both the archery and gun ranges.

It seems obvious that Buck & Doe’s Mercantile has accomplished their goal of a welcoming environment that lands somewhere between educational and entertainment. Rex feels like, “We have a great relationship with our clients and their families.” And Jason says no place compares to Buck & Doe’s Mercantile. He feels like he is part of the family every time he visits. “That kind of consistency and care is rare—and it’s what sets Buck & Doe’s apart.”

It is clear Buck & Doe’s primary goal is to share knowledge through classes, the shooting range, and one-on-one interactions with customers. “We wanted to start the business to, via education and experience, take the negative connotation away from
shooting sports.”
