Children’s Museum of Atlanta is stepping into the future, with the final phase in its Step Up to Science exhibit series, made possible by generous donors to the Bridge to the Future campaign. Entitled “Catch a Wave: A Sound & Light Exhibit,” children can explore the fascinating realms of shadows, light sources, color theory, vibrations and properties of sound. This exhibit offers hands-on activities through a variety of experiential areas, including the Color Wheel, Colorful Shadows, Laser Table, Touchable Sound, Pixel Pegs, Standing Wave Tube and Prisms. Designed to inspire curiosity and a love for science, the Step Up to Science exhibit is ideal for both kids and kids at heart.
The Color Wheel combines hands-on science with creativity, allowing children and families to create various colors by turning the wheels.
At Colorful Shadows, little ones use materials and can describe them in terms of opaque or transparent, demonstrating how shadows are formed when a light source is blocked by an opaque item.
The Touchable Sound Station gives kids the opportunity to not only hear the sound waves they create and control, but also to touch and see them.
The Standing Wave Tube creates a visual representation of the auditory phenomena of frequency, wavelength and amplitude.
Using tubes, kids observe that as sound is generated, the pressure waves flowing through the tube cause wires to align -- displaying the sound's waveform.
Finally, the Prisms section displays different shapes and sizes of prisms to help explain the process of light refracting into components - helping children focus on using keywords like spectrum, wavelength and light source.
