Christopher Schafer is not a psychologist but he does try to learn what makes men tick when they enter his store. The president of Christopher Schafer Clothier, he calls it the psychology of how you want to project yourself. It turns out, having the right suit is key.
Christopher learned the art of measuring and clothing design while living in London, where he developed a way to blend European style and fit with a modern attention to detail, plus clean understated lines, and comfort.
At his shops in Los Angeles and Baltimore, Christopher and his team offer suits that range from classic to outlandish. “It’s 100 percent whatever the client wants,” he says. “We get to know each person and their personality.”
Christopher’s son Seth Schafer is vice president, while Casey Rowe manages the shop in Baltimore. All three are designers.
“Classics never go out of style,” Christopher says, “It’s the detailing that makes it fit the person and makes it exciting, whether the stitching, the buttons, the lining etc. Those add to personality of it. I don’t want to make just one suit. I help them build a wardrobe. You want to have staples and some fun stuff too.”
In addition to suits, the store’s custom offerings include shirts, sport coats, pants, tuxedos, and ties. They also sell shoes, socks, and other accessories.
The Baltimore store is 4,000 square feet divided into the clothing showroom and an event area with a stage and sound system. “Most people get the vibe when they walk in,” Christopher says as he points to the motorcycle and guitars on display.
Christopher, who is also a drummer, hosts jam sessions and other events in the store’s stage area. On October 23, their 10-year anniversary party will feature live music, and the public is invited. Visit 1400 Aliceanna St. Baltimore, Md.
