Every man has a personal reason that drives him to prioritize his health. Whether it’s the desire to be a better partner, the need for energy to keep up with young kids, or the goal of reclaiming vitality with age, identifying this “why” is essential for making meaningful life changes—ones that affect not only physical health but overall well-being.
More and more men are discovering that lasting health improvements don’t require a complete lifestyle overhaul. Instead, they often stem from micro habits—small, consistent actions that are easy to implement and maintain. Gameday Men’s Health in Vestavia Hills is at the forefront of this approach, offering tailored solutions for men of all ages who want to live life at their healthiest.
Gameday isn’t your typical medical office. Leather chairs face TVs tuned to ESPN, the walls feature sports murals, and a sense of camaraderie fills the space. It’s designed to be a place where men can relax and discuss their health openly, supported by a team that understands their needs. “Men's health hasn’t been a large focus in our culture for a long time, so we aim to provide education and shine a light on men’s health,” says clinic owner Athens McLaughlin.
At Gameday Men’s Health, patients range from 24 to 74 years old. Each first visit includes testosterone testing to assess baseline levels. “The reason all men should come in, regardless of age, is that testosterone levels will inevitably decline,” explains Athens. “It’s a medical fact that typically around age 30—or sometimes even earlier—testosterone begins to drop.” For some, this decline feels sudden, like “falling off a cliff,” while it’s more gradual for others. “Either way, you won’t know where you stand until you get tested and have someone to talk to about it.”
For Greg Mihaly, a father of two young sons and a business owner, Gameday has been a game-changer. “There isn’t a lot of free time or sleep in my life, so when I heard what Gameday could offer, I had to check it out,” he says. “My initial results showed room for improvement, and I signed up on the spot.” Weekly visits have become his path to restoring his energy and health. “I don’t have more time in my day, but I just feel better,” he adds.
Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is a cornerstone of Gameday’s approach, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. The team at Gameday customizes a holistic plan for each patient, aimed at helping them reach optimal health. Each plan includes diet recommendations from a licensed nutritionist and practical tips for increasing fitness. For some, this means simply incorporating more movement into their daily routines.
“One thing we tell fathers is to take their kids to the park and play,” Athens says. “Just 45 minutes outdoors can make a big difference, and the kids love it.”
He also suggests walking a dog. “If you have a dog, take it for a walk. Dogs never refuse a walk!” For those with a partner, Athens encourages activities together, like trying a new sport. “My wife and I started playing tennis as part of my lifestyle changes, and it’s been great. We get out on the court, enjoy quality time, and learn something new together.”
Since adopting these changes, Athens has lost 26 pounds, and his wife, who joined him in making these lifestyle changes, has lost 8 pounds without following any specific diet plan. “It’s all about small, sustainable changes,” he emphasizes.
As the excitement of New Year’s resolutions fades, having accountability becomes crucial. “It’s easy to fall off track by February without a support system,” Athens says. “The great thing about our practice is that we see our patients regularly for weekly injections, and during those visits, we remind them of the goals they set when they first came in.” This regular check-in helps reignite their motivation. “If someone starts slipping or losing confidence, we’re here to lift them up and remind them why they started this journey in the first place.”
With a supportive team behind them, patients at Gameday gain the confidence and consistency they need to reach their health goals and enjoy better health for years to come.
