With almost 20 years of experience working in luxury skincare, Greenfield Hill resident Rose Buatti knows a thing or two about taking care of our outermost layer. After earning a degree in early childhood education, she pivoted out of personal interest and trained at the pioneering Christine Valmy Institute before landing a job at the famed La Prairie Spa at the Ritz-Carlton New York. When her loyal clients began asking for her to give facials in their driveways during the pandemic, she had the “Aha!” moment that ultimately led her to convert her screened-in porch to a skincare oasis.

Word soon spread of her comprehensive yet luxurious approach, and her customizable services now book months in advance. Depending on a client’s needs, Rose’s offerings include LED light therapy, NuFACE microcurrent facial toning, hand and foot treatments, facial cupping, extractions, Dermaglow microdermabrasion, and sheet masks. She also is certified in Cellstory Liquid Microneedling and more recently began offering head spa services.

Here are her top six tips for accessible and effective skincare:

Invest in a serum: Clients like to ask Rose which expensive neck cream, cleanser, or moisturizer to buy. But the most bang for your buck will instead come from a quality serum that will repair and protect. “The particles are scientifically made smaller, so the technology behind it reaches deeper levels in the skin,” she says. “Over the long-term, you will get more benefit from that. Moisturizers lock in moisture, but serums do the work.”

Use your hands: There are plenty of skincare gadgets available for purchase, but they usually end up collecting dust. “You could invest in a $10 Gua Sha or just use your fingers to do some lymphatic drainage and self-facial massage in the morning, especially if you had too much soy sauce or drinks the night before,” she says. This will improve circulation and rejuvenate skin by restoring blood flow. Best part? It’s free.

Break out the ice:  Another free tip is using ice, whether it’s straight out of the tray or in the form of a frozen spoon. Applying ice can help with redness, pimples, acne, and puffiness. “It wakes the skin up as well as improves circulation, helps with lymphatic drainage, and brings down inflammation,” Rose says. “It’s one of the best kept secrets for acne that a lot of people don’t know. As soon as you feel something start to form, grab an ice cube and apply it off and on three times a day, and that will speed up the healing.”

Spray hypochlorous acid. Hypochlorous acid is an antimicrobial and antifungal compound that our bodies make naturally and hence something that is already familiar to our skin. Adding a few spritzes of it to your morning and evening routine—or anytime really—is basically “one stop shopping,” she says. “You can use it in your eyes or mouth if there’s a sore, and it speeds up healing.” Rose loves both the Hydrinity Hyacyn Active Purifying Mist as well as the Magic Molecule Daily Skin Spray.

Treat internally as well. When thinking about skincare, many people forget that what goes into our bodies can also affect the outside. Rose takes a daily vitamin C supplement to “help glow from the inside out,” and advises her clients with acne to take zinc. She also recommends eating antioxidants, whether in the form of berries or other super foods as they help with collagen building and retention. “It’s a whole approach,” Rose adds. “There are lots of things you can do that aren’t just applying creams to the face that can help with any skin ailment.”

Don’t forget SPF.  Rose says protecting skin from UVA/UVB rays year-round is the number one way to prevent aging. “I think we’ve all seen that image of the truck driver showing how the left side of his face aged 20 times more than the right,” she says. “If you are spending all this time and money on your skin, SPF is essential. It protects your investment.”
