Skin in the Game

Why Skincare Is A Long Game Worth Playing

Today’s world is built on the expectation of instant results. So when it comes to skincare, investing time and money into healthy, glowing skin can feel counterintuitive. There is no overnight transformation, no one-time fix for a big reveal – and yet, for April Wilkie, esthetician and owner of Healing Hands Skin Therapy in Springfield, Missouri, that is precisely the point.

Like any meaningful investment, reaping the benefits of healthy skincare requires patience and consistency. April often draws a parallel to investing in retirement funds. “I invest in my IRA every week with the goal of benefiting from those investments years down the road,” she says. “A single facial will always be better than none at all, but the deeper value lies in what happens beneath the surface days and weeks later, when the skin completes a full cell renewal cycle.”

That’s when compounding benefits begin to add up. “You don’t produce a new skin cell until you shed a dead one through exfoliation. When we are young, we have a 28-day skin cell cycle, but as we age that cycle slows down. That’s where exfoliation comes in and helps retrieve our youthful glow.”

She warns that, like many aspects of health, skincare prevention is easy to dismiss when the skin appears “fine.” But by the time visible damage surfaces, the work becomes corrective rather than protective.

Over her decades-long career, April has seen teenage clients all the way through clients in their 70s or 80s who are receiving their first facial treatment. While she is happy that her senior clients are taking the time to pamper their skin, she admits that there is also a sense of sadness that they waited to do this for themselves. Yet her message is not one of vanity, it is one that comes from the known dividends paid by being a good steward of one’s skin – health, confidence, and future well-being to name a few.

However, skincare shouldn't feel overwhelming, April says. The key to effective skincare boils down to consistency. She dismantles the myth that the only way to healthy skin is through elaborate, time-consuming routines. Having a high-quality cleanser, SPF, and a nightly moisturizer, in and of itself can be a win that makes a noticeable difference. More advanced products like serums can accelerate results, but they are not prerequisites for healthy skin.

April’s philosophy is that skincare is about tailoring solutions to fit individual needs, not selling trends or addressing skin problems, such as acne or wrinkles, with quick-fixes that lack long term results. She often hears from clients about trendy products that turned out to be a waste of time and money. That's why she remains committed to matching clients with products that favor clean beauty standards and ingredients that rejuvenate the skin instead of clogging pores with artificial color, fragrance, or fillers. She states that skincare isn't one-size-fits-all – it’s about getting to the root cause of any undesirable skin issues. “For our clients, it’s like going into a boutique and having something tailored to your body,” she says.

This is where Healing Hands distinguishes itself. Influenced by her mother’s background in naturopathy, April believes that the skin is part of an interconnected system and explains that skin is the largest organ of elimination on the body. “Whatever goes into our bodies finds a way out.” Acne, for example, can be linked to internal issues such as gut health or hormonal imbalances. Through deep-dives and personalized testing and consultation, April’s clients receive care that addresses the whole person, not just their complexion.

Her primary advice is consistent home care, something she likens to physical health routines. “You can, and should, take daily vitamins at home to stay healthy, but you still need to see a doctor regularly,” she explains. This is where her professional services come in.

In-office treatments are more customized and, at times, more aggressive. They are designed to correct, refine, and guide what clients maintain at home, she says. Together, they form a system rather than a splurge.

That system also includes knowing what not to invest in. April is straightforward about the damage to skin caused by prolonged exposure to the sun or the over-use of tanning beds, particularly in young people. “You don’t think about your skin when you’re young,” she says. “But the increased risk of melanoma just isn’t worth it.” Instead, she suggests alternatives that suit individual needs and skin types, such as quality self-tanners and daily SPF to offer additional protection.

As Healing Hands approaches its 30th anniversary, April is reflective of the legacy she hopes to leave. Beyond treatments and products, she wants to journey with her clients on their path to beautiful, healthy, glowing skin. Having travelled this journey herself and discovering how transformative the right products can be, April tailors solutions that factor in her clients’ lifestyle, budget, and overall well-being.

“I want to be on the journey with you to your best skin ever,” she says. And after three decades, it’s clear that, for April, skincare isn’t about chasing perfection, it’s about making informed investments that result in healthier skin over a lifetime.

The key to effective skincare boils down to consistency.
