Sports. Life. Business. University was just the first step in the journey toward the creation of SLB The Agency. Derrick Furlow, Jr. transitioned like a champion as he went from college football to becoming a successful author, motivational speaker, and businessman. Derrick’s passion has always been empowering others, so when I scheduled our first meeting regarding the progressive next step and combining his years of life and work experience with the firm's legal backing, it was evident that we were on the cusp of creating a one-stop-shop for all of our athletes’ needs.

Combining our unique experiences with our respective businesses and our passion to help others brought us together, but that was just the beginning. The next step was collaborating with Derrick’s vast network of former athletes. Hear from Derrick and a few other former Vol athletes -- Fred White and Chris Lofton -- who have joined the team.

Mital: Derrick, for the athlete deciding to sign with an agent, why this agency?

Derrick: This is an agency that’s for the athlete by the athlete. With that being said we understand that you’re more than an athlete. That’s why we are taking the holistic approach you won’t find with many agencies. We want to help you develop in sports, life, and business. So regardless of what your future holds, you become elite on all levels of life. That’s what you get when signing with us – real life practical experience from those who have walked in your shoes.

Mital: What do you think sets the former athlete agent apart from the rest?

Fred: This agency, at its core, is based on teamwork. We all have a role that is just as important as the others. Also, working with people who share the the idea of servicing all our clients with honesty, integrity, and character.

I want to become an agent to give athletes what I didn’t have as an athlete, to give knowledge beyond the playing field. The landscape of college athletics is changing. I want to use my experiences in athletics and business to educate current and future athletes to take advantage of the opportunities in front of them.

Chris: I think back to my time in college and I didn’t have a lot of knowledge about being a college athlete and then, when it was over, how to transition into real life. I want to make sure I help out as many athletes as I can along their journey as they play college sports, possibly into a professional sports career, or as they transition from sports into all of the other areas and phases of their life.

Mital: What can you share with the readers about what is to come?

Derrick:  We are combining business concepts and strategies that will be unique to this agency and refreshing for our athletes. This is about providing all of our athletes with the guidance, tools and resources to give them the advantage they deserve by those who have been where they are at.
