Founded by Thomas Clay and his children, Smart Healthy Homes emerged from a deeply personal and challenging experience with mold toxicity. “Twenty-six years ago, no one understood mold and mold toxicity,” Thomas reflects. “It wasn’t something being discussed or even studied and tested for at the time. It was only during a home renovation project of an old home that my family and I realized we were surrounded by something that triggered health-related illnesses and autoimmune conditions.”
Mold has since evolved into a significant environmental concern, and Thomas emphasizes that a new generation of mold is hiding in plain sight, causing health issues for many. “Toxic mold is simply doing what Mother Nature intended. It is evolving and mutating, and we are discovering it in places where it never used to grow,” he explains. One of the most alarming developments is the infection of HVAC systems, which can spread toxic mold spores through air ducts, making their way into our lungs, onto our skin, and even contaminating our clothing and furniture.
Contrary to popular belief, toxic mold isn’t just limited to the infamous black mold; it encompasses various strains, including Aspergillus and Penicillium. Thomas recognized the urgent need to address this growing problem, prompting him to seek effective methods for treating and remediating the mold. This mission created a unique opportunity for Smart Healthy Homes to educate the community while eradicating these harmful toxins from homes. “I wanted to ensure that we weren’t combating toxins with other toxic chemicals.” Thomas asserts. “We utilize a variety of holistic approaches, including methods like activated oxygen that are used in hospitals.”
Thomas’s passion for health and wellness extends beyond mold remediation. Living along the Gulf Coast, he has observed a significant increase in mold prevalence, particularly in buildings and homes nestled in these moist, warm environments. “It’s the perfect breeding ground for mold,” he notes. “That’s why it’s crucial to educate others about mold testing and prevention.” He emphasizes that realtors, property managers, homeowners, and business owners all need to be informed about the risks associated with mold.
One common misconception is that a standard home inspection will detect mold. Thomas clarifies, “Most inspectors do not actively look for mold unless it is visibly apparent. They rarely check HVAC units or ductwork, and many are not professionally trained to conduct mold testing.” This lack of awareness can leave properties vulnerable to hidden mold issues that could have serious health implications.
At Smart Healthy Homes, the goal is to empower individuals to fight back against this silent killer and put an end to mold toxicity. Toxic mold can exacerbate existing autoimmune conditions, potentially create new health issues, and in severe cases, lead to death. By providing comprehensive mold testing, inspection, and remediation services, Thomas and his team make it possible to breathe easy, ensuring the safeguarding of the health of families and communities.
Through education and proactive measures, Smart Healthy Homes aims to raise awareness about mold toxicity and its consequences. Thomas believes that by arming individuals with knowledge, they can take control of their environments and protect their health. “Our mission is not just about remediation; it’s about prevention and education.”
