In an interview with Kevin J. Brothers, Ph.D., BCBA-D, Executive Director of Somerset Hills Learning Institute, the impact of education for children with autism becomes evident. Dr. Brothers' journey began over three decades ago when he entered the field, fueled by a passion to challenge the misconception that individuals with autism were incapable of progress.
Founded in 1999, Somerset Hills Learning Institute has grown from modest beginnings in a convent basement to a leading institution serving 30 students with a broader service reach impacting over a hundred individuals daily. Dr. Brothers' vision extends beyond traditional education, encompassing research, mentorship and global outreach.
"Everything that we do gets measured," Dr. Brothers asserts, emphasizing the institute's evidence-based approach. He likens their method to optometry, stating, "We're like opticians. We have to look at the antecedents to a skill and the consequences to a skill and magnify both of those initially until it works for the student."
One defining factor of Somerset Hills Learning Institute is its commitment to preparing students for real-world integration. Dr. Brothers explains, "We have to develop a program to meet their needs. We do that in partnership with their parents."
"Whether it's mastering toileting, following instructions, or dental care," Dr. Brothers continues, "The curriculum addresses a broad spectrum of life skills essential for independence."
Beyond academics, the institute fosters partnerships with the community to create employment opportunities for adults with autism. "We're over time looking to expand the customer base," Dr. Brothers notes, referring to the institute's hydroponic greenhouses project, known as "Paradise Salad."
"Somerset Hills Learning Institute serves children aged three to 21, bridging the crucial gap between literacy early intervention and adulthood," Dr. Brothers affirms. "Through a holistic approach, students gain the skills and confidence to navigate the complexities of the real world."
Somerset Hills Learning Institute shows the power of education for children with autism. As Dr. Kevin Brothers' and his team continue to inspire hope and empower individuals with autism to reach their full potential.
