Spectacular Sunrises!

2021 Brings Renewed Hope for a Brighter Future

In December, people everywhere were saying, “I’m so done with 2020.” The pandemic, racial unrest and political turmoil—followed in the metro area by a devastating early ice storm that knocked out power for thousands, some for days, and destroyed countless trees—made for a less-than-stellar year for many of us.

With the elections over and coronavirus vaccines becoming widely available, 2021 is looking to be a better year.

To show our optimism for the coming year, we gathered photos of sunrises across the metro area. Some show recognizable landmarks, like the one of Skydance Bridge, inspired by Oklahoma’s state bird, the scissor-tailed flycatcher, taken via drone by Trina Arnold/Horsefly Photography. Ohers simply depict some of the lovely locales around Cleveland County.

And hey, happy new year!

About Our Photographers

Trina Arnold/Horsefly Photography mainly photographs nature and wildlife, but is a historian by trade, so she also photographs historical architecture. She loves to photograph people and to "capture the human spirit, for once the shutter snaps the picture, that moment is forever captured." FMI: horseflyphotography@gmail.com or on her Facebook page at Horsefly Photography.

Michael Duncan has been a trial lawyer for 35 years, but has been photographing people, places and things for longer than that. His photography has been exhibited in art galleries in seven different states. He sees his photography as his therapy.

Robert Lane is the official photographer for Oklahoma City Community College. He says, "When I'm not at work, photography is just a hobby. I'm mostly a writer and filmmaker who has been lucky to do what I love for the past 20+ years. I'm originally from Washington, D.C,. and I've only been an Okie for 12 years. I'm married and I have two genius children."

Kathy Griffith is a broker/co-owner of and a Realtor with Prime Realty, but as a young girl, she took a career assessment that indicated "outdoor photographer." She is the self-appointed family historian through her photos, which are taken with an iPhone.

Jim Kurdzo was a postdoctoral fellow with the Advanced Radar Research Center on the OU Norman campus when he took this photo. He is now on the technical staff at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory.
