Spring Cleaning For Your Smile

Why dental cleanings are vital to your overall health

Spring is right around the corner which means you’re getting ready to clean out the junk drawers and give away everything that doesn’t spark joy. But are you ready for your teeth cleaning too? Spring is a great time to give your dental hygienist a visit.

I brush and floss my teeth, isn’t that enough?

That’s a great start! Unfortunately, our mouths naturally collect and pick up all sorts of microscopic particles from the air and from food that get stuck to our teeth. These micro-particles build up and result in plaque and tartar which get left behind from brushing, flossing and even rinsing with mouthwash. Getting a professional cleaning not only gets all the stuck particles from the surface of your teeth, but your dentist or hygienist will check for cavities, signs of gum disease and even screen for oral cancer.

How many times a year should I get my teeth cleaned?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that those without periodontal (gum) disease should get a cleaning at least every 6 months and those with gum disease should receive a cleaning every 3 to 4 months.

What can happen if I don’t get my teeth cleaned?

People who don’t get their teeth cleaned regularly are more susceptible to plaque, cavities, gum disease, tooth loss, and bone loss. Gum disease has been linked to a host of more serious problems like dementia, stroke, heart disease, and heart attacks.

Cleanings can also help with your teeth’s overall appearance. They can look whiter, brighter and healthier!

So, as you’re decluttering and cleaning your home this spring, take some time to schedule your teeth cleaning. Be sure your hygienist explains the status of your oral health and what steps you need to take to improve it. Brushing and flossing are a must but getting your cleanings regularly can help improve your teeth’s appearance and even help with the detection of more serious problems.
