Spring Into Tree Care

Why keeping your trees healthy, safe, and beautiful year-round matters

As warmer weather arrives, our spring cleaning projects begin to move from inside the house to the yard. Trees, shrubs, and landscaping all require maintenance to stay healthy, safe, and beautiful throughout the entire year. I spoke with Cameron and Mia Kelley, owners of Monster Tree Service of Lee’s Summit about some common misconceptions, proper tree care, and what homeowners should know to protect their landscape.

Why is tree care important, and what happens if homeowners neglect it?

Taking care of your trees is essential for homeowners. Having healthy, well-maintained trees protects your property value, contributes to the beauty of your landscape, and enhances safety. Living in Kansas City, seasonal storms, high winds and sudden temperature swings exposes trees to constant environmental stress. Regular pruning, inspections, and preventative maintenance can prevent structural problems, pests, diseases, while improving curb appeal and safety. When trees are neglected, they can become costly repairs and safety hazards. Consistent, professional care helps homeowners safeguard both their property and these valuable living investments.

What is a common misconception homeowners have about tree care?

Trees do not care for themselves, they need maintenance just like anything else. Even mature trees need periodic pruning, health assessments, and monitoring for structural issues or pests. Neglecting to properly care can lead to decay, safety risks for your property, and reduced tree health.

How can homeowners go about caring for their trees?

There are several signs that indicate a tree might need attention. If you have dead or falling branches it can signal internal decay or structural weakness. Cracks, splits of cavities in the trunk or major limbs, may suggest rot affecting the stability. You should also pay attention to the canopy. Thinning leaves, leaves dropping early, or unusual yellow discoloration can point to diseases, pests or roots that are under a lot of stress. A tree that suddenly starts leaning or appears to be lifting soil at the base, might have failing roots. Fungal growth, like mushrooms near the base, often suggests underground decay. These are all signs that your tree needs professional attention.

How does Monster Tree Service use technology or specialized equipment to make tree work safer and easier?

Tree work can be intimidating. For each project, we carefully evaluate and determine the safest and most efficient approach. This might include a crane, a lift, or climbing techniques. We also use wood movers that protect lawns. Doing this minimizes the impact on your property and ensures that trees and shrubs are being cared for.

With Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor Day (April 24) coming up, what ways do you encourage people to celebrate?

There are many meaningful ways to get involved. Tree planting ceremonies, volunteering for local clean-up efforts, attending youth programs that teach about the value of conservation, or participating in a guided tree walk are all great options. Whether you’re celebrating as a family, school, or a community group, these activities strengthen appreciation for trees and encourage long‑term care of the urban and natural forests that benefit everyone.
