Fifteen years ago, St. Benedict’s Episcopal School opened its doors in Smyrna, Georgia, with a clear mission: to inspire learning, nurture growth, and instill the values of Episcopal education in its students. Founded in 2009, the school started with just 60 students, offering an independent education from preschool through eighth grade. Fast forward to today, St. Benedict’s has grown to serve around 640 students, a testament to its success and the strong community it has built.
From the beginning, St. Benedict’s faced the challenges typical of a new school: establishing credibility and attracting students. However, the school’s strong mission and vision, paired with the unwavering support of the community, helped it flourish. Today, St. Benedict’s is recognized for its exceptional outplacement program, with graduates being highly sought after by top magnet and independent high schools. This achievement speaks volumes about the quality of education and care students receive.
Parents, too, speak highly of the school’s environment. Christine Fierro, whose boys have attended St. Benedict’s, shares, “St. B’s challenged my boys academically in an environment where they felt respected, safe, and seen. This combination taught them two valuable life skills: the ability to think critically, and with kindness.” It’s this blend of academic rigor and emotional support that has defined the St. Benedict’s experience for so many families.
One of the school’s recent milestones includes earning STEM certification through CIGNA, positioning St. Benedict’s as a leader in both academic excellence and innovation. As the school celebrates 15 years of growth and success, it is clear that St. Benedict’s commitment to providing a well-rounded, values-driven education remains strong.
This year’s theme, "Celebrating 15 Years of Excellence: Imagine What’s Next," invites the St. Benedict’s community to dream big as the school looks to the future. The Annual Fund aims to raise $850,000 to support this vision, with funds going toward final payments on new property and vital programs such as technology upgrades, professional development, and enrichment activities. The school’s goal is to have 420 families contribute, with an average donation of $2,025 by 2025. Every gift, regardless of size, plays a crucial role in enriching the student experience and building the future of St. Benedict’s.
The school’s Preschool through 8th-grade model offers students a nurturing environment during key developmental years, giving them leadership opportunities, fostering self-awareness, and helping them build a strong sense of belonging. Sandra, a parent since 2014, reflects on her family’s experience: “We initially chose St. Benedict’s because we wanted a school where our children would feel like they were part of a tight-knit community. While the school has grown since then, we have continued to feel that special space where the teachers know who your kids are and your classmates have turned into deep friendships. We are so excited to see all the opportunities ahead at St. B’s!”
Looking ahead, St. Benedict’s plans to continue building on its 15 years of excellence. The school has acquired a 4.2-acre parcel of land that will allow for exciting outdoor, hands-on learning experiences for both students and summer camp attendees. As the school reflects on the past 15 years and envisions the future, its commitment to nurturing and inspiring students remains stronger than ever.
