Parenting is never a one-size-fits-all experience, but raising a child with profound autism is a journey filled with unique challenges, surprising joys, and an incredible amount of love. For my daughter, who is 14 years old and nonverbal, finding a pediatrician who truly understands her needs has given this mama total peace of mind.
From the moment we met Dr. Tereasa Ballay, I knew we’d found our doctor. Pediatric visits can be overwhelming for any child, but for my daughter, they can feel like insurmountable obstacles. New environments, unfamiliar faces, and unexpected sensations can trigger intense anxiety. But Dr. Ballay has a gift—a combination of patience, empathy, and a genuine love for children that instantly sets my daughter (and me) at ease.
Every appointment feels less like a clinical checkup and more like a visit with a trusted friend. Dr. Ballay takes the time to let my daughter acclimate to the room, never rushing or imposing. She talks to her directly, not through me, even though my daughter is nonverbal. She seems to understand that communication is more than words and listens with her eyes and heart, picking up on my daughter’s subtle cues that many would miss.
Dr. Ballay is one of three incredible women leading the practice alongside Dr. Deanna Smoak and Dr. Jamie Wallace. Each of them brings a unique story and perspective to their work, but all share the same dedication to creating meaningful relationships with the families they serve.
Dr. Deanna Smoak has always loved working with children, a passion she attributes to being the oldest of six siblings. After completing her studies at the University of West Georgia and Mercer University, she realized pediatrics was her calling. “I love treating children because they’re so resilient. Their innocence and wonder are refreshing. Plus, parents are often more likely to listen, which makes it easier to make a difference.” For Dr. Smoak, the joy of pediatrics lies in watching her patients grow and forming lasting relationships with families over the years.
Dr. Jamie Wallace, a Marietta, GA native, discovered her love for medicine during a mission trip while in college. Initially unsure about her career path, she found her calling after observing the impact healthcare could have on families. “At first, I thought I’d pursue OB/GYN, but I realized I was more drawn to the babies,” she explains. As her career progressed, Dr. Wallace recognized that the relationships she built with families were the most fulfilling part of her work. “I’ve been here so long now that I’m seeing children of my former patients—it’s a privilege to be part of these generational stories.”
For Dr. Tereasa Ballay, the journey to becoming a pediatrician began at age nine in Texas. A gymnast with a natural instinct to care for others, she often found herself tending to teammates’ scrapes and injuries. “Even as a young girl, I wanted to help,” she recalls. Her experiences as a nanny for triplets further solidified her passion for working with children. Although she briefly considered specializing in OB/GYN, pediatrics won her heart. “Watching my patients grow up and being part of their lives over the years is the most rewarding part of my job,” she says.
What unites these three remarkable women is their unwavering commitment to fostering strong relationships with families. They understand that parenting is deeply personal, and their role is to guide and support without judgment. Dr. Smoak notes, “Parents want what’s best for their kids — even more than for themselves.” Dr. Wallace adds, “Our job is to help parents make informed decisions. We want everyone to feel at peace.”
For me, this compassionate approach is greatly appreciated. Dr. Ballay has not only provided exceptional medical care for my daughter but has also become a steadying presence in our lives. She validates my concerns, celebrates small victories, and reassures me that I’m not navigating this journey alone. Her ability to see my daughter as the incredible individual she is has brought me immense comfort.
One of the most remarkable aspects of their care is the complete absence of judgment. Raising a child with profound autism can feel isolating, especially when others don’t understand your choices or challenges. But Dr. Ballay, Dr. Smoak, and Dr. Wallace create a space of acceptance and understanding, making every interaction feel safe and supportive. Their shared philosophy centers on the importance of relationships. Whether through small moments of encouragement or years of continuous care, they’ve built a practice that feels like an extended family.
Having a partner like Dr. Ballay on this journey is priceless. If you’re fortunate enough to find a healthcare provider who truly connects with your child and supports your family, hold onto them tightly. They are more than a doctor—they are family.
