With more than 35 years in the fitness world, Michael Cain has seen how movement transforms lives. Now Health & Fitness Manager – Medical Fitness at Greensboro MedCenter at Sagewell, he draws on his background in athletics, personal training, and physical therapy to help people feel and function at their best.
Michael says it’s natural for our fitness goals to evolve with age. In our 20s, motivation often centers on appearance and performance. In our 30s and 40s, our goals shift toward maintaining energy, managing stress, and staying strong. By our 50s and 60s, prevention takes priority as we see firsthand how aging affects our loved ones.
One myth Michael is eager to address, however, is that aging limits progress. “I think the biggest misconception is that we can’t improve our fitness or build muscle after a certain age. We can continually get stronger,” he says. At Sagewell, he sees some members begin their fitness journey at retirement but quickly grow to appreciate it because of how it makes them feel.
His advice is to keep it fun and social. Join a group fitness class with friends and grab coffee together after. Work with a trainer to ensure that you’re moving safely and effectively, and so you can feel more confident in the fitness center. Michael is also a huge proponent of water fitness, and Sagewell offers an exceptional aquatics center.
Wherever you are in life, Michael’s message is simple: “It’s never too late to start.”
