For more than five decades, Scylvia-Elvira Danese has understood something about style that transcends trends: the most beautiful garment is one that feels as though it was created for the person wearing it.
As the owner and creative force behind Danese Creations, Scylvia is a third-generation custom designer and tailor whose career has become synonymous with craftsmanship, impeccable fit, and a willingness to take on what others might consider impossible. Since 1971, she has helped Arizona clients transform ideas, treasured garments and special occasions into pieces designed to feel entirely their own.
Her journey, however, began long before she imagined fashion would become her life's work.
“I started sewing at a very young age because my mother, who was a master tailor and designer, wouldn’t make the clothes I wanted to wear,” Scylvia says. “So, I learned to make them myself.”
She originally intended to become a lawyer, but life took her in another direction. “God had other plans, and He knew best,” she says. “Today, I absolutely love what I do. It brings me tremendous joy to accomplish what others think is impossible.”
That ability to see possibility where others see limitations has defined Danese Creations. From couture gowns and bridalwear to heirloom redesigns and intricate alterations, Scylvia approaches every garment with the same objective: helping the person wearing it feel confident.
Alterations, she explains, can require just as much artistry as creating something entirely new.
“You have to understand the unique shape of the individual while working within the structure of a garment that was already designed and constructed,” she says. “My job is to make it appear as though nothing ever changed, that the garment always fit perfectly. Some days I feel more like an architect than a seamstress.”
When creating a custom piece, that expertise begins with understanding both the client’s vision and the person who will ultimately wear it. Scylvia is known for her candor, summed up in one of her favorite sayings: “I don’t do ugly!”
“Not every style works for every person, and honesty is one of the greatest services I can provide,” she says. “My goal isn’t simply to create a garment; it’s to create the right garment.”
Mother of the Bride gowns are among her most frequently requested custom creations, although Scylvia finds inspiration in occasions of every scale. Weddings and formal celebrations may provide opportunities for dramatic couture, but she is equally enthusiastic about designing something for a recital, first date, or personal milestone.
One project, however, has remained unforgettable.
On Easter Saturday in 1985, Scylvia stopped by her shop only to deliver two finished orders after she and her staff had worked late throughout the week. Then the phone rang. On the other end was a devastated bride whose wedding gown had arrived the night before poorly constructed, improperly fitted, and beyond repair.
Someone had told the bride, “If anyone can fix it, Scylvia can.”
When Scylvia examined the dress, she quickly realized repairing it wasn’t an option. The bride thought she would have to cancel her wedding.
Scylvia had another idea.
In just two hours and 50 minutes, she created an entirely new wedding gown from scratch, complete with a full skirt, dropped waist, sweetheart neckline, puff sleeves and full lining. The bride arrived at her ceremony only 10 minutes before it began, wearing a gown made especially for her.
The extraordinary rescue became a defining story of Scylvia’s career and was later featured by Channel 12 News.
It also captures the philosophy that has shaped Danese Creations: find a way.
Scylvia’s experience has since taken her work far beyond Arizona. Her creations have appeared on television and in magazines and have been worn at events including the Country Music Awards and Emmy Awards. Yet despite the accolades, the foundation of her work remains deeply personal.
“It all comes down to trust,” she says. “I listen carefully, answer every question, and often create garments simply from measurements and a client’s description of what they’re envisioning. If it requires sewing, I can make it, even a leather wedding gown.”
Her approach is grounded in lessons passed through generations. Scylvia remembers racing her mother at their sewing machines as a young woman. Her mother would challenge her to work faster, but speed alone was never enough.
“Sometimes I’d finish first and proudly announce I was done,” Scylvia recalls. “She’d inspect my work and remind me, ‘No, no, no, Chiquita. You have to be fast, but you have to be perfect.’”
It is a lesson Scylvia has carried throughout her career. Trends may change, silhouettes evolve, and fabrics come and go, but exceptional craftsmanship never loses its relevance.
