Student of the Month

Eli Herbane

Happy 18th Birthday, Eli!
Eli Herbane recently graduated from Allen High School. He was born with Down syndrome and has been part of the Allen ISD Special Education program since he was 3 years old.

“He’s had incredibly amazing teachers every step of the way,” says his mom, Aster, “He’s come so far and it’s such a blessing.”

As a single mom, it can be a struggle at times to juggle it all, but Eli’s mom says coming home to his joyfulness at the end of the day makes it all worth it. “He’s such fun to be with! He’ll take my hand and twirl me around in the aisles at the grocery store. He makes me forget all the stress.”

Caring, sweet, and thoughtful, Eli lovingly cares for his mom and his brother. “He makes my coffee every morning and empties the dishwasher every evening,” says his mom, “When we’re somewhere and someone gives him something – like a lollipop at the doctor – he always asks for one for his brother, too.”

Recently, the Allen Americans Hockey Team sponsored Eli through the 2023 Allen Eagle “Adopt a Senior” program. Eli was chosen as Player for the Day. In participating, he signed a contract, received an autographed game jersey, and watched the team practice. “Eli's hard work, determination, and strength make him the perfect teammate,” says Ana Gonzalez, VP of Social Impact. “We’re honored to have him on our squad!”

What’s Next for Eli?
He’s going to continue at Allen High School in the 18+ program, a 2-year program that prepares special needs students for the workforce. Eli likes science and organizing things. Without doubt, Eli's attention to detail and willingness to always lend a helping hand will be appreciated in whatever career path he chooses, and he’ll be a welcomed team member wherever he goes.

What He’s Watching:
The original "Barney" series (Did you know it was filmed here in Allen in the current Dinosaur Company building?!).

Who He’s Following:
Equally obsessed with rice, dinosaurs, and elephants, Eli enjoys watching explorer adventurers who make documentaries about dinosaurs and elephants on YouTube.
