Going Bigger for Less

The forecast for tomorrow? 107 degrees. It's official. Summer has arrived.

Like most, you're brainstorming how to cover your windows to keep your home cooler during the day. Escaping these extreme temperatures can be difficult, and rightfully so. When temperatures rise above 100 degrees, nothing seems to create an adequate barrier from the Sun's relentless heat.

Though, there are products that have proven themselves in several states; Arizona, Nevada, Texas, New Mexico, and California among others; exterior retractable solar screens and European style rolling shutters. There are a handful of individuals who are acutely aware these exist, and they were prepared in Spring for Summer's arrival. As good Stewards, they take the time to share their experiences and information with their friends, family and neighbors about how great these products are for a wide array of purposes; creating more energy efficient homes, blocking UV rays, stopping the heat outside, taming the Sun's blinding rays, creating privacy, comfort, style and more at the touch of a button.

For some, covering a single window, door, or patio opening with a retractable solar screen or European style shutter is sufficient. For others, there may be many windows, doors, or patio openings that need covered. Each home and business is unique. It would be wise to assume the more windows, doors or patio openings that need covered would result in a higher cost of product, right? Maybe, but not always true. Let's explore 'Subtraction by Addition'.

In the pictures, you see five windows and each of these windows needed a retractable solar screen to block the Summertime sunlight and heat. Each of these windows could have their own retractable screen. But, each window is on the same wall, with the same exposure and located within the same room of the home. So, what if we cover all five windows with a single retractable solar screen? Do you think it would be more expensive because the retractable screen is larger? Don't worry, most everyone assumes this to be true! But, it's the opposite!

In situations such as these, it becomes more economical to cover as many windows as possible with a single retractable solar screen or rolling shutter. The larger the area covered by a single unit, the more cost effective it becomes when compared to covering each window, door, or patio opening individually. By doing so, we've subtracted from the total cost, by adding to the overall size of the solar screen; Subtraction by Addition.

With the ability to span up to 32 feet in width with a 20 foot rail height, a single solar screen can cover up to 640 square feet of space. That's a lot of windows, doors, or patio space! And a lot of opportunity for you to show your fiscal savviness, creativity and forward thinking to become more energy efficient.
