It’s a sunny day in North Carolina during baseball season. The sky is blue, filled with the distinctive ping of bats and cheers from the stands. In the middle of it all is Andrew Kearns, coaching his 13-year-old son Flynn’s team — something he’s done since the early days of T-ball.
Off the field, Andrew is the owner of Surface Specialists of the Triad. The company focuses on repairs and refinishing for bathroom and kitchen surfaces, including tub-to-shower conversions. Andrew had spent more than a decade in sales before making the leap into business ownership. While selling maintenance supplies, he noticed a growing demand for surface repair and refinishing services. “I thought, why not do it for myself and build something from the ground up?” With that mindset, and the confidence to back it up, he purchased the Triad franchise of Surface Specialists 10 years ago.
For homeowners weighing their options, Andrew says the cost difference between refinishing and replacement is often the deciding factor. “Full replacement can run anywhere from $6,000 to $10,000,” he explains. “Refinishing is typically in the hundreds. It’s a much more affordable option.”
Today, Andrew runs a small but nimble operation with a handful of employees. He himself wears just about every hat. “There’s never a typical day,” he says. From scheduling and customer communication to handling receivables, he’s involved in every aspect of the business. It’s a pace that requires flexibility but also offers a front-row seat to what he enjoys most: the results.
“The transformation,” he says. “Seeing the before and after, and knowing we’re saving people money, is really rewarding.”
That value, combined with a longstanding system of support, helps set the company apart. As part of a national franchise established in 1981, Andrew benefits from decades of proprietary products and processes. “There’s 45 years of experience behind what we do,” he says. “That support makes a difference.”
Outside of work, Andrew’s life centers around his family. He and his wife and son spend much of their free time together, often outdoors. “We spend a lot of time at the beach, boating, and fishing,” he says. “We travel a lot and just enjoy being together, whether that’s at home or with friends in the neighborhood.”
That sense of presence is something Andrew prioritizes, even amid the demands of running a business. “When there’s still a stack of papers on my desk, it’ll still be there tomorrow,” he says. “Be present.”
Much of that presence shows up on the field. Andrew has coached his son’s teams since his early days in T-ball, continuing through basketball and now middle school baseball as Flynn plays second base. “I played sports myself, and I feel like I have something to give back,” says Andrew. “I enjoy the kids and the teaching part of it.”
It’s a balance that offers perspective, too. Time spent coaching and being around young athletes provides a welcome contrast to the day-to-day responsibilities of business ownership. “It’s a nice release from the grind,” he says.
Whether he’s refinishing a worn-out tub, coaching a team, or spending time with family, Andrew always remains focused on what matters and stays present in the moment. It’s a philosophy that continues to shape both his business and his life here in the Triad.
