Tailleur on Main

Brings a Taste of Paris to the Heart of Kansas City

There are restaurants where you go for a great meal, and then there are restaurants that make you want to linger just a little longer. Tailleur on Main is the kind of place that invites you to slow down, savor every bite, and enjoy the moment.

From the instant you step through the antique double doors, guests no longer feel like they are in Kansas City. Candlelight flickers across marble tables, french music fills the dining room and rich colors, antique furnishings, and brass accents create the feeling of discovering a charming neighborhood bistro in Paris.

Owner Heather White says every detail was chosen with intention.

"I like to think we're in the people business first, and the food business second," White says. "People come to Tailleur to celebrate life's moments, whether it's an anniversary, a first date, or simply a Tuesday evening. While they may remember that first bite, I hope what stays with them is how they felt while they were dining."

That philosophy is woven into every corner of the restaurant. The well-loved leather menus, vintage glassware, fresh flowers, polished silverware, and attentive hospitality all work together to create an experience that feels both elegant and welcoming. White found much of her inspiration while traveling through Paris, where she became fascinated not only by the food but also by the effortless beauty of neighborhood cafés, boutique hotels, and bistros.

"Paris has an incredible ability to make luxury feel effortless," she says. "Nothing feels over-designed, yet every detail has purpose."

Rather than recreate a formal French restaurant, White wanted Tailleur to capture the warmth and authenticity of the places locals return to again and again. The result is a dining room that feels collected over time, layered with antiques and timeless touches that make guests feel instantly at home.

The menu follows that same philosophy. French cooking techniques serve as the foundation, but every dish is approachable and designed to be enjoyed by everyone. "Whether someone orders Steak Frites or tries something new or more adventurous, each dish should feel comforting and approachable," White says.

The thoughtfully curated wine and cocktail program completes the experience. White and her team have assembled a list featuring both familiar favorites and boutique wineries that encourage guests to discover something new. For those looking for a memorable pairing, she recommends the duck with Patricia Green Pinot Noir or the salmon with a Côtes du Rhône Blanc Vidal-Fleury.

Tailleur's location on Main Street has also become part of its charm. White saw the historic neighborhood as the perfect setting for a restaurant designed to be more than just a dinner reservation. "I wanted a destination for our guests to build an evening around," she says. "Maybe they start with a cocktail at Cheval, have dinner at Tailleur and finish the night with dessert and one last glass of wine on our garden patio."

For first-time visitors, White already has the perfect evening planned. Begin with a glass of Champagne, share the Herb Broth Mussels and Pomme Frites, enjoy the Coq au Vin with a glass of French Cabernet Franc, then finish with one of the house-made desserts and the Café au Lait cocktail. Her final piece of advice? "Stay for another glass of wine. That's when the best evenings happen."

In a city filled with outstanding restaurants, Tailleur has carved out a place that feels truly unique. It's not simply about exceptional French-inspired cuisine or beautifully crafted cocktails. It's about creating memories around the table. "I hope they remember how they felt," White says. "People rarely remember every ingredient in a dish, but they always remember how a place made them feel."

At Tailleur, that feeling is one you'll want to experience again and again.
