Friends of Baseball, a Greeley-based non-profit organization dedicated to supporting youth baseball in Northern Colorado, will host its highly anticipated Breakfast of Champions on Saturday, February 1st. This iconic event brings together baseball enthusiasts, legends and supporters, all united by their passion for the game.
"We started as a group of business people with an idea and a dream to help kids fulfill their baseball ambitions along with their parents," says organization president Steve Baker.
Steve went on to explain that the main focus of Friends of Baseball was at first a simple one: to help kids who couldn't afford to be in Little League or Greeley-Evans Youth League by supplementing expenses such as cleats, gloves, uniforms and large equipment such as pitching machines.
"We've since expanded in scope but remain all about doing what we can to get more players in the game," Steve adds.
Since its inception in 1987, Friends of Baseball's annual Breakfast of Champions has raised critical funds for local baseball programs, including high schools, colleges and even semi-pro teams throughout the area. Past speakers have included such legends as Nolan Ryan, Tommy Lasorda and Darryl Strawberry, and the event continues to draw an impressive crowd of hundreds of baseball fans each year.
"Over the years, we've started helping individuals and teams as far north as Cheyenne and as far south as Grand Junction," says Friends of Baseball committee member Mark Welsh. "We've also recently heard about a special-needs league in Erie that we provided a sponsorship to this last year."
General admission for Breakfast of Champions is $25 a ticket, and all proceeds benefit youth baseball in the community. Kids ten and under are free.
