1. What should I do if I receive an audit notice?
You should bring it to a tax attorney immediately. Clients who try to handle it themselves tend to obtain very bad results. Auditors will frequently tell taxpayers that they will not accept types of documentation that the taxpayer would actually win within Tax Court. They also try to get taxpayers to sign documents admitting to owing amounts that they may not owe. They sometimes even accuse people of lying to a federal agent. Even attorneys and CPAs should not handle their own audit. Furthermore, a good tax attorney will almost always save a client exponentially more than they charge.
2. What if I actually owe them the money?
Even if you believe that you owe the IRS the money, you should still have your case reviewed by a tax attorney. Even after a balance has been reduced as much as possible, it is still possible to obtain relief based on inability to pay and other types of relief.

I have been a tax attorney for 18 years. I opened my Atlanta office in 2008 and moved to the Vinings area at Galleria Office Park in 2012.
