While community holiday gift drives typically yield an abundant number of toys for young children, Boys and Girls Clubs of Collin County staffers in Frisco say they are desperate for appropriate donated items for tweens and teenagers.
Suggested items to donate for those 12 to 18 years old include books, electronics, food, movie passes, retail cards, backpacks, stick-on phone pockets, barrette sets, beanies, drinking tumblers, battery power banks, lip balm kits, sports equipment, pillows, cellphone cases, journals, pop-socket phone stands, sunglasses, perfume, makeup brush cleaners, wallets, cable bites, Bluetooth speakers, air loungers, card games and mobile chargers.
Donations should be dropped off by Dec. 9 at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Collin County Administration Office, 7700 W. Main St., Suite E.
Liliana Rogers, the Clubs' chief development officer, says donations should remain unwrapped, so they can be matched to recipients.
"We really appreciate donated gift bags or boxes to eventually place the items in, though," she adds.
Boys and Girls Clubs of Collin County Background
Starting as the McKinney Boys Club in October of 1968, this club has been a landmark in the Collin County community and has influenced the lives of countless youth.
In 1997, the Frisco branch opened and operated out of the Frisco Independent School District Administrative Offices. Less than a year later, it moved to Acker Elementary School until opening doors to a location at 6890 Main St. in downtown Frisco. Not long after, the Bob and Joy Darling Branch was opened at 6726 Main St., also in downtown Frisco. For several years, this location served approximately 260 to 300 children per day. Children crowded around the floor to soak up the motivation and teaching that came from staff members. They moved pool tables and foosball tables every day to set up tables to enjoy a hot meal.
The Frisco club moved again in 2008 to the current location of 8750 McKinney Road and now serves more than 1,000 youth.

Liliana, who oversees The Heritage Club as an association of friends of Boys and Girls Clubs of Collin County, says it's an excellent time of year to consider including the Club in estate plans.
