The magic that happens at the Smyrna barbershop, Haircuts by Travis, isn’t just a result of the skilled shaves, trims, cuts and scrubs. Yes, Travis Sanders brings 30 years of experience to the barber chair, including owning a successful barber college in Detroit.
But, the gift he gives to each of his customers is his commitment to their well being.
“I like to provide a sanctuary, encouraging soul-baring, bonding, and connection,” says the savvy Sanders. “We’re in this world together and I find it so important to be present and provide an opportunity to share a certain kind of intimacy when the occasion arises.”
His Smyrna shop is open to care for all sorts of people and many hair types and including straight, curly, colored, or natural and services include shampoo, facial scrubs, shaves, and hot towels, hair coloring, and razor lines.
While more than three-quarters of his clients return regularly (every 2-4 weeks) for the same service and style, he keeps abreast of trends and new tools of the trade.
And, after recommending styling and hair care products for years, he decided to create his own line, moving manufacturing to the US this year. “Our pomade is water-based and smells great and I feel confident about not only using these products in the shop but also sending them home with my clients,” says Travis.
Family ties brought him to Smyrna in 2003. “I came for the opportunities, to be with family and get away from those Michigan winters.” He lived in Buckhead, Midtown, and Decatur, setting up shop along the way before returning to his home base here on Spring Road five years ago. Many of his customers have followed him to this chair and he now has the joy of serving the children of his loyal customers.
With three other full-time barbers and stylists at the shop, Travis makes time to recharge on his day off to “tend to the temple.” He says he enjoys massages at The Joint, manicures, and working out and encourages his friends and customers to do the same. “I see so many people not taking care of themselves and make it a priority to take care of myself.”
Take it from Travis, the body is a temple.
