Pro Tips From State Fair Concessionaires
With so much to see and do, we went to the experts for insider tips for how to maximize your time on the fairgrounds. These families have worked alongside the State Fair of Texas to provide the tastiest treats for generations and know all the best places to go and shortcuts to take! We hope their secrets help you enjoy your visit even more this year.
”The best time to come is always opening day or opening weekend. Everything is so clean and the energy is electric! I also encourage parents to bring their small children on Tuesdays to take advantage of the discount rides. Thursdays are great for a date night when many vendors offer discounts on selected menu items.” said Amber Fletcher of Fletcher’s Original Corny Dogs. She added, “Our Big Tex Circle stand is our most popular, but Fletcher’s operates six additional locations scattered throughout the fairgrounds, so you can get a corny dog without waiting in a long line!”
“There is a mini convenience store called The Lucky Seven if you need something (like an extra diaper, lip balm, or sunscreen) over by the Livestock buildings on Nimitz.” said Amber and Mark Zable, owners of Belgian Waffles. “Another pro tip is to save unused coupons because they never expire! If you find yourself with a small amount and don’t want to keep up with them, consider handing them off to a young family with kids and help them make a memory.”
“The best place to watch the TX/OU Game (outside oof the Cotton Bowl) is our main stand inside the Embarcadero Building. It’s the only air-conditioned restaurant on the fairgrounds with tables and chairs AND we show the games on multiple big screen TV’s.” said Christi Erpillo and Johnna McKee of Fernie’s Funnel Cakes whose family has operated concession stands at the Fair since 1969. “There are so many ways to stretch your dollars at the Fair. From discount days to bringing canned food to the gates for money off admission, discount tickets from Kroger and McDonald’s to coupon discounts on various evenings - there are tons of ways to never pay full price!”
