The Benefits of Natural Juicing

Dr. Claudia's Super Detox Green Juice

While it’s fun to indulge in treats and enjoy meals out, it's also important to strike a balance and maintain a healthy diet. For this month's Culinary Creation, we teamed up with Dr. Claudia Tamas of Natural Medicine and Rehabilitation (NMR) to bring you a delightful juicing recipe that both tastes good and is good for you.

Growing up in Romania, maintaining an organic diet was a way of life for Dr. Claudia. Everything was farmed locally with no pesticides or chemicals used in the process. The number of toxins people ingested was naturally reduced because few preservatives and fertilizers were used. It didn’t take any extra effort to execute a healthy diet. Here in the United States, it can be a little more challenging.

Teaching the community about healthy living is Dr. Claudia's passion. As a Doctor of Physical Therapy, she takes a holistic approach to find the root cause of her patients’ symptoms. She believes that treatment should be patient-centered rather than disease-centered.

"Correcting nutrient deficiencies with proper diet and supplementation are among the changes that lead to living an optimal life," Dr. Claudia says.

As opposed to a traditional medical office, at NMR, Dr. Claudia has the luxury of spending a lot of quality time with her patients. In addition to providing physical therapy, she counsels her patients and can work with them in-house on nutrition, stress management and exercise. She finds that those that adopt the holistic approach heal at a dramatically faster rate. “The biggest thing that we focus on here is education, so our patients can make an informed choice about their health.”

Healthy living is a family affair for Dr. Claudia. Her husband, NMR founder, Dr. Vince Sferra, and 9-year-old daughter, Anna, both participate in meal prep.

“I want my daughter to establish these habits and educate her peers. Get your kids involved. When they take part in making the juice, they are more likely to drink it and enjoy the health benefits.”

The below recipe for Super Detox Green Juice is great for the whole family. Wondering why it's so good for you? This refreshing juice reduces inflammation of the digestive system and alkalizes the body. Packed with greens to detoxify, hydrate and nourish your cells, it’s the perfect pick-me-up or healthy morning kick-start. The celery also provides protection against inflammation of the digestive tract, with just one cup providing more than one-third of your daily vitamin K needs. Start your day with a little pep in your step with this great recipe. Cheers!

Super Detox Green Juice:

Using a juicer, combine the following organic ingredients:

2-3 Celery stalks, leaves removed

1 small cucumber

2 kale leaves

1 small lemon or lime, peeled

1 green apple
