The Doctor Who Actually Listens

At The Modern Woman in Tinton Falls, Dr. Melissa Blackburn is redefining women’s healthcare with time, empathy, and total-body wellness.

Dr. Melissa Blackburn wants to know everything about you. How old was your mother when she was diagnosed with cancer? Did her sister or brother or parents ever have it too? Do you have kids—or do you want them? Why did you like (or not) your last gynecologist or primary care physician? What does the best version of yourself look like, regardless of time, money or constraints? And, by the way, what kind of time do you have at your disposal, and what do you feel is the most important thing you do to take care of yourself right now?

She’s the kind of doctor you keep—and it’s no surprise that many of her patients follow her from corporate providers like RWJBarnabas Health and Hackensack Meridian Health to The Modern Woman, her new concierge medical practice in Tinton Falls. Tucked inside The Atrium on Gilbert Street (if you pass the stately red barn-like New Shrewsbury Racquet Club, you’ve gone too far), The Modern Woman represents a new era of women’s health care—one rooted in time, trust and truly personalized attention.

A New Model for Modern Medicine
The Modern Woman is a concierge medical practice, meaning patients pay for services as they would with any health care provider, in addition to an annual membership fee that allows Dr. Blackburn to take on fewer patients and spend more time with each one. The result: longer, more meaningful appointments, genuine connection and an emphasis on prevention rather than reaction.

“I’m not really helping women as much as I want to,” Blackburn says of her years working in corporate medicine, a system built on efficiency over empathy. “Visits are quick, impersonal and don’t leave space for the conversations that really matter. I want to talk about fitness, nutrition and routines—the things that influence women’s overall well-being.”

At The Modern Woman, she’s finally able to do just that. Patients receive the same care they would from a standard gynecologist—pap smears, breast exams and mammograms—but with a comprehensive focus on mind-body connection and long-term health. The practice offers customized and comprehensive bloodwork panels, the latest innovations in preventive health, as well as referral services to local nutritionists, dietitians and trainers.

“I don’t even consider myself just a gynecologist,” she says, though she is board-certified and performs all traditional procedures. “I see myself as a preventive, comprehensive health care doctor.”

Where Expertise Meets Empowerment
Blackburn’s approach blends medical precision with a holistic perspective. Her practice provides not only general gynecology and preventive care, but also hormone replacement therapy, peptide therapy, medical weight management and aesthetic services such as Morpheus8 face and body treatments, neurotoxin injections and laser therapies for hair removal and skin rejuvenation. Patients can also receive pelvic floor strengthening, preconception and contraception counseling, and support for post-childbirth recovery and perimenopause transitions.

“At The Modern Woman, your care is never rushed,” Blackburn says. “We create space for meaningful conversations, thoughtful evaluations and personalized treatment plans. You’re not just another patient on the schedule—you’re a woman with a story, a voice and a body that deserves to be supported in every way.”

Her philosophy is grounded in her background. Blackburn grows up in Hollywood, Florida, and attends Florida State University on a full scholarship, majoring in exercise physiology. Her love for understanding the human body leads her to Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she graduates summa cum laude. She chooses osteopathic medicine for its holistic philosophy—viewing the body as an interconnected unit rather than separate organ systems.

After completing her OB/GYN residency at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, Blackburn settles in New Jersey, where she falls in love with both the community and the women she now serves. Her passion for nutrition, exercise and preventive medicine remains central to her practice today.

A New Standard of Women’s Care
Step into The Modern Woman, and you notice the difference immediately. There’s no line at the counter. You don’t sit in a crowded waiting room for an hour past your appointment. Instead, you slip into a plush robe—not a paper gown—and meet with Blackburn in a serene, spa-like environment. A bottle of San Pellegrino waits nearby as you discuss your health history, life goals and personal well-being.

Most visits last close to an hour, giving patients time to talk openly about their health and ask questions they may have held back elsewhere. “It’s a space where women can finally say, ‘This is where I can talk about my health, my family, my mental well-being,’” Blackburn says. “It’s an inviting environment where you feel seen and heard.”

Patients say the experience is transformative. Some rave about the laser hair removal that changes their confidence before bikini season. Others share how pelvic floor therapy helps them recover from incontinence issues after childbirth. Many credit peptide or hormone therapy for renewed energy, balanced mood or faster recovery from old injuries.

The details of the treatments vary, but one common refrain echoes through every testimonial: “I’ve never felt more comfortable going to the doctor.”

Medicine, as It Should Be
For Blackburn, that comfort is not just a luxury—it’s essential. “When women feel comfortable, they’re more likely to share the details that help me help them,” she says. “It’s about creating relationships where we can focus on prevention and total-body wellness, not just symptom management.”

Her patients’ loyalty speaks volumes. Many follow her from her previous corporate practices to The Modern Woman because they trust her care, her candor and her commitment.

As the practice grows, Blackburn envisions The Modern Woman as a sanctuary for every stage of life—a place where teenagers can learn about their bodies without fear or shame, where mothers can navigate postpartum and menopause transitions and where women of every age can feel empowered, educated and prioritized.

At its heart, The Modern Woman is not just a medical office. It’s a movement toward the future of medicine—not only a practitioner who listens, honors time and champions women’s voices, but who is constantly learning and implementing the newest science in women’s health, preventive medicine and metabolism.

Medicine. As it should be.
