As downtown Memphis continues to evolve, Tom Lee Park embodies the spirit and momentum of these changes, offering a wide range of activities from free yoga classes to major festivals or even just a stroll by the river. This summer, the park completed its newest landmark, the Memphis Flyway, a striking observation deck that extends over the river and offers an unparalleled view of one of North America's busiest migratory bird routes. We spoke with Paul Chandler, President and CEO of Memphis River Parks, about the Flyway's impact, the redesign of Tom Lee Park and why investing in exceptional public spaces is helping shape the future of Downtown Memphis.

Tom Lee Park, one of Memphis’ signature public spaces, “is often one of the first sites visitors see when they arrive in Memphis,” according to Paul. He adds, “We’re proud to work on making it the most hospitable and enjoyable first impression in town.” The Memphis Flyway is the last component of the park’s award-winning redesign plan. It’s a 220-foot pathway with an ADA-accessible observation deck that hovers over the Mississippi River. “It’s a stunning piece of architecture, and I believe it will draw visitors on that aspect alone,” says Paul.

Paul believes the Flyway experience becomes interactive when visitors are surrounded by other people, all gazing together at the panoramic views of the Mississippi River. And, of course, it attracts birdwatchers. For the best birdwatching, plan your visit for early morning or late afternoon. When describing the Flyway, Paul says, “It’s a unique spot to experience over 100 bird species migrate through the Memphis riverfront each year. While peak activity for some songbirds happens in September, the Mississippi Flyway sees massive waves of waterfowl and late-migrating birds throughout the late fall and early winter.”

Beyond the Flyway, Tom Lee Park offers a variety of experiences for local and visiting families. The park’s free programming is designed to enrich the mind, body and spirit, focusing on health, arts and culture, and education. Paul encourages visitors to explore the park’s free, interactive Storybook Trail along the riverfront, a collaborative project with Literacy Mid-South. “As you walk the blue path near the park’s Life on the River Playground, you’ll find pages from a seasonal children’s book installed on child-height panels for an immersive, step-by-step adventure.” From fitness classes to volleyball tournaments, Tom Lee Park provides the space for Memphians to prioritize their health outdoors, while guided by fitness experts at no cost. Finally, the park highlights the diversity and creativity of our community through live music, lantern parades, poetry readings and more. Paul says, “We pride ourselves on not only playing host but also programming spaces across Tom Lee Park. Our river parks are a place for inspiration, entertainment and education. With amenities and access points for every type of visitor, you can find a trail, a playground, a court, a class and a comfortable seat within reach.”

Tom Lee Park has become far more than a destination along the Mississippi River. It’s a place where Memphians and visitors can gather, explore and connect with the city in new ways. Whether you're watching thousands of migratory birds from the Memphis Flyway, attending a community event or simply taking in a river sunset, the park invites everyone to experience the energy and beauty of Downtown Memphis.
