Cointreau vs. Triple Sec
They are very different in quality and strength. Cointreau is a higher-end brand within the "triple sec" category. Triple sec is lower-quality and sweeter.
Cointreau is consistently 40% alcohol by volume (ABV) and 80 proof and used where quality matters, such as in Margararitas, and Cosmopolitons. Other triple secs range from 15% to 30% ABV and are better used in sweet drinks or when a lower cost is desired.
What are Blood Oranges?
Blood Oranges are a distinctive variety of standard oranges known for their striking deep red flesh. Their flavor is more complex - often described as a blend of citrus with subtle raspberry-like notes. Blood or Raspberry Oranges are normally available during winter from December through April.
What Makes Them Red?
Their color comes from anthocyanins—antioxidant pigments commonly found in flowers and berries like blueberries, but rarely seen in citrus. These pigments only develop under specific ripening conditions, when warm days are followed by cool nighttime temperatures.
Storage
Although they can go unfridgerated for a few days, you can increase their shelf life by around 2 weeks if you to store them in your fridgerator's crisper drawer.
Healthy Fruit
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), "potential health benefits of anthocyanins include antiangiogenesis [which involves preventing the growth of new blood vessels that tumors need to grow], prevention of cardiovascular disease, anticancer, antidiabetes, improved visual health, anti-obesity, antimicrobial, and neuroprotection." (Please check with your doctor before drinking the juice or eating the fruit.)
