The Heart of Caregiving at Home Instead-Brea

Inside Home Instead-Brea’s meaningful mission of care, shaped by strong family values and personal experience

In a season dedicated to celebrating fathers, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how fatherhood shapes lives within families and across communities.

For Ken Tabb, owner of Home Instead in Brea, the meaning of Father’s Day extends far beyond a single Sunday in June.

It reflects a lifelong example of compassion, responsibility, and hands-on care that influences how he leads, serves, and gives back each day.

“My journey began with a family legacy of care. While both of my parents were deeply compassionate, this Father’s Day, I am reflecting specifically on my father’s example. He defined ‘care’ through action, managing a household where his mother and special-needs sister lived with him. Because of that dedicated environment, my grandmother lived to be 106 years old.”

That kind of upbringing continues to shape how Ken consistently shows up for others.

“When I left the corporate world of sales, I knew I wanted to do something where I could make a real difference. I was drawn to Home Instead because their heart for seniors showed in every aspect of their business. It allowed me to take the "caregiving spirit" I saw in my father and mother, Beulah, and share it with my community,” he explains.

Today, that spirit is at the heart of his work. As more families navigate the challenges of caring for aging loved ones, the wish to stay at home surrounded by familiarity and independence has only grown.

For Ken, honoring that wish is personal.

“I understand firsthand what it means to age with dignity. When assisting my aunt, we had many conversations about her living alone; she wouldn't have it any other way. In a world that sometimes feels like it’s leaving them out, seniors want to maintain control and ownership. Her home held her memories and possessions—it was her space. At Home Instead, we make it easier for seniors to stay in the homes they love.”

Since taking ownership of the business in 2019, Ken has witnessed a significant shift in the industry. In a field once dominated by women, the need for male caregivers has grown.

“While some clients are initially reluctant to welcome a man into the home, they quickly discover the unique strength, companionship, and perspective a male caregiver provides. It is often exactly what the family truly needed.”

Ken may not be a biological father, but he’s helped raise two incredible young women—his stepdaughter Zsa-Rhya and his cousin Brieana.

“Supporting them has taught me that life is about giving back. That is the ‘heart of a father.’”

That “heart of a father” shows up in unexpected ways—especially with more men stepping into professional caregiving roles.

Whether it’s physical support, shared life experience, or simply a steady presence, they’re helping fill a real need.

“We don’t just provide a service; we continue a legacy. As a Christian, my faith deeply influences my desire to make a difference. At Home Instead—Brea, we truly care for the well-being of our clients because all of us have personal experience caring for loved ones. We always say this is not just a job—it’s a calling. Taking care of your family is who we are.”
