The Hottest Kitchen & Bath Trends for 2022

Jackie Wright, Owner and Lead Designer of the Valley's Macy Lane Designs, Shares Her Insights

It’s no secret that kitchens and bathrooms are some of the most widely used spaces within a home—and with that comes a lot of wear and tear. So, if you are considering updating either of these spaces this year, here are several trends to consider:

Making More Space: One of the biggest design trends is creating more space in both the kitchen and bathrooms. Expanding kitchen pantries, islands, storage areas, and workspace areas can help add value to your home and increase the overall functionality of each room.

Embracing Color:While the “official” verdict is still out on the current popularity of the all-white kitchen, color is making a major comeback in 2022. Updated design plans are incorporating various green, blue, and black hues in everything from cabinetry to backsplash tiles. In addition, jewel paint tones of peacock and citrine could be perfect as an accent wall or unique shelving color.

Matte Gold & Black: The shiny gold of the 1990s is still out, but more refined hues of champagne or brushed gold—especially when it comes to plumbing fixtures and hardware—are on-trend. Ditto for matte black, which can be seen in bathroom fixtures, flooring tile, bathtubs, art, and home décor accessories.

Cabinet Minimalism: With people spending so much more time at home now, functionality and accessibility are top-of-mind for kitchen areas. Homeowners are requesting fewer upper cabinets and deeper base cabinets, allowing for refrigerated drawers, dishwashing drawers, and in-island microwaves. Sinks with workstations are another must-have for today’s updated spaces.

Modern Wood Finishes: White oak and grained walnut with a variety of detail are gaining popularity in both kitchen and bath areas. While painted wood reigns supreme, warm wood tones with attractive millwork or fluting can help balance the coldness from tile surfaces in kitchens and bathrooms.

Wallpaper: Yes, it’s true… wallpaper is making a major comeback for just about every room in the house. For bathrooms, don’t be scared to go bold and apply the paper to every wall if you’re working with a small space like a powder room. For kitchens, consider a fun print for a breakfast nook or feature wall behind some open shelving.
