On a quiet stretch of Church Street in Bonne Terre, Missouri, a century-old chapel and its surrounding buildings have found new life, and purpose, as The Iron Knot; the town’s newest wedding and event venue. With its curated charm, meticulous renovations, and a story rooted in history and hometown pride, The Iron Knot is more than a place to say “I do.” It’s a testament to the history and community of Bonne Terre, and is firmly situated as a long standing staple. A place once designed to congregate for liturgy is now one of celebration and fellowship that serves all cultural and religious denominations.
Their journey began in 2023, when Bonne Terre natives Josh and Kindsey Black purchased the historic First Congregational Church—a stunning structure originally built in 1908 by industrialist Charles B. Parsons. Inspired by a European church he once visited, Parsons recreated a scaled-down version right in the heart of his hometown. With its intricate Tiffany stained-glass windows and classic lines, the church stood as a symbol of artistry and reverence for more than a century.
Just three months after acquiring the church, the Blacks purchased the neighboring Masonic Lodge. The two buildings, considered historic anchors of Church Street, had never been privately owned - until now. The Lodge, a stately brick building once owned exclusively by the Freemasons, held decades of local lore and tradition. With its towering ceilings, original woodwork, and commanding presence, it now complements the chapel as part of a multi-building campus designed to host life’s most meaningful moments.
Renovating the entire compound took about eight months, and the Black’s breathed new life into each space while thoughtfully preserving its rich history. Today, The Iron Knot is comprised of multiple restored buildings, all within steps of each other: a non-denominational chapel, an elegant reception hall, a bridal suite, a groom’s suite, a charming on-site cottage, and the grand Lodge itself which is also home to The Iron Skillet, situated in the lower level. The layout invites couples and guests to immerse themselves in an experience that’s both seamless and unforgettable.
The accommodations are as inviting as the setting. The cottage sleeps up to eleven and features a six-person hot tub for unwinding after a day of festivities. The groom’s suite offers a quiet, cozy retreat for two. All lodging options are listed on Airbnb and Vrbo, making it easy for guests and family members to settle in, and stay close. Whether hosting a traditional wedding or a more intimate micro-wedding, couples enjoy full access to the entire property.
But The Iron Knot is more than a venue. It's a homegrown vision brought to life with sentiment and care. Josh still remembers riding his bike past these same buildings as a kid, never imagining they might one day be his. “We’re not afraid to fail, so why not?” he says. “We’re chance takers, and we know we’ll do it right.” And that’s just what they did; took a leap of faith and poured their hearts into every detail.
Throughout the year, The Iron Knot hosts more than just weddings. From baby showers and celebration dinners, to luncheons and meetings, the venue offers a warm, welcoming space for gatherings of all kinds. October may mark the height of wedding season, but their calendar stays booked year-round, accommodating events for all traditions, backgrounds, and beliefs. “Come as you are” isn’t just a motto – it’s a promise.
In January 2025, The Iron Knot expanded its offerings with the opening of The Iron Skillet, a cozy, soulful restaurant tucked into the basement of the Lodge. At the helm is Executive Chef Stephanie, a Bonne Terre native whose culinary career spans over 3 decades. After earning a degree in nutrition from Missouri Southern State University in 1995, Stephanie opened Farm Fresh Steak House in Springfield, Missouri. Her restaurant became a local favorite for its farm-to-table approach, comfort-forward cooking, and homemade bakery items. In 2024, she moved back to Bonne Terre and catered a wedding at The Iron Knot, an encounter that quickly turned into a partnership. Now, as executive chef of The Iron Skillet, Stephanie leads a team of 15 employees in creating handmade meals rooted in local flavor. Guests can expect everything from flaky cinnamon rolls and flavorful pastries, to juicy grilled burgers, slow-cooked pot roast, hearty soups, and seasonal dishes. Nearly every menu item can be made gluten-free, and ingredients are locally sourced. The restaurant is open Friday through Sunday, with plans for international five-course tasting dinners already in the works, offering a new level of culinary depth to the Bonne Terre community.
Kindsey and Josh are intentional with their time and energy, and strive to build not just a business, but a legacy. They’re invested in their community, deeply rooted in their faith, and passionate about supporting other small businesses. What they’ve created at The Iron Knot is more than a venue or a restaurant – it’s a destination, a gathering place, and a love letter to their hometown. Whether you're walking down the aisle, gathering with loved ones, or simply sharing a meal with friends, The Iron Knot invites you in with open arms. It's a place where love is celebrated, memories are made, and history finds a beautiful new chapter.
"Every brick, every window, it all means something to us. This isn’t just a venue; it’s part of our story, too."
