Here, we feature some of Southlake’s business leaders who are contributing to their community in different ways. We also take a peek into their inspirations, what they enjoy doing in their spare time, and how they find their work/life balance.

Jon Atwood

President, Atwood Custom Homes (https://atwoodcustomhome.com/)

Q: What makes living and working in the Southlake area special for you?

A: Being a local to the area since 1980, growing up here and watching all the growth over the years, and now being a part of the new developments and growth, adds a little “extra.”

Q: What do you most enjoy about your work, and would you like to mention anything special about what you do, why, how you got involved in your line of work, etc.?

A: I enjoy watching all the new residents move in from out of state and all the diversity of the families we help find new homes for. I love asking what brings people to choose to live in this area and what they do for a living.

Q: How do you find your work/life balance?

A: "Work hard = play harder.” We try to get out of the bubble as much as possible and appreciate the blessings we take for granted daily.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

A: Travel, sporting events and food, lots of good food.

Q: Would you like to mention anything about family for this issue of the magazine?

A: Growing up here, I still have all my family close by and get to see them regularly.

Q: Anything else you'd like readers to know about you?

A: I feel confident that the company we’ve built here truly works hard to provide the very best “lifestyle products” for our clients and their families.

Q: What makes living and working in the Southlake area special for you?

A: It is a special, tight knit community where everyone has a winning mentality and a drive to be successful.

Q: What do you enjoy about your work?

A: Using my creativity to build a custom home from a concept on paper to an actual creation.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

A: I am a car guy/gear head at heart who loves restoring and collecting muscle cars from the 60's and 70's.  A sunny afternoon drive in a classic car is the perfect weekend treat for me.

Q: Would you like to mention anything about family for this issue of the magazine?

A: My family is everything, and as Dad it is cool to watch my kids’ lives unfold, and witness what the next chapter holds for them.

Q: Anything else you'd like readers to know about you?

A: I'm very passionate about my job, and my natural attention to detail and creativity help bring my clients' vision of their custom home to life.

Shawn Horne

Director of Good Times and Leisure

Q: What makes living and working in the Southlake area special for you?

A: The Southlake community and the pride it has in everything it does. Community members really support each other and their charity endeavors.

Q: What do you most enjoy about your work, and would you like to mention anything special about what you do, why, how you got involved in your line of work, etc.?

A: I love the restaurant and hospitality business. When life and the world around us is uncertain, a great meal can not only bring a different perspective, it brings people together in a positive way.

Q: How do you find your work/life balance?

A: I turn off my phone and computer on weekends. I work Monday through Friday, which is pretty rare for this business. I set aside two hours a day for personal development, which centers me on a daily basis. It helps me stay focused and productive.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

A: I enjoy reading books, creative cooking, attending 80's New Wave and Reggae concerts, teasing wild animals and spelunking.

Q: Would you like to mention anything about family for this issue of the magazine?

A: My dear father would have really liked the man I have become. He and I did not understand each other until later in life. He passed away 10 years ago, but I still honor him with his favorite meal and drink on Father’s Day.

Q: Anything else you'd like readers to know about you?

A:  I am involved in 16 charities. 501(c) is my other full time job.

Kyle Moss

Q: What makes living and working in the Southlake area special for you?

A: The strong sense of community and the pride that Southlake residents share for their city. Southlake sets an incredible example for other DFW communities.

Q: What do you most enjoy about your work, and would you like to mention anything special about what you do, why, how you got involved in your line of work, etc.?

A: Building homes pushes you to be creative and think outside the box every day. Being a third generation builder, construction is in my blood and has been a big part of my life since a young age. My father, Paul, and I started Beckett Graham Homes together in 2020 after many years of building individually.

Q: How do you find your work/life balance?

A: The key for me is making sure to schedule downtime to be with family and friends. It could be a vacation or just something as simple as visiting my kids at school for lunch.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

A: I love watching and coaching my sons' sports teams. I also play as much golf as my business and family schedule allows.

Q: Would you like to mention anything about family for this issue of the magazine?

A: I believe family is the foundation for success in life and in business. I’m very proud that our company operates as a true family business, with my Mom, Dad and two sisters each serving valuable roles.

Q: Anything else you'd like readers to know about you?

A: My wife Katie and I have three children, ages 4 months to 5 years. We attend Gateway Church in Southlake.

Q: What makes living and working in the Southlake area special for you?

A: Convenience of everything simplifies work/home/social life.

Q: What do you most enjoy about your work, and would you like to mention anything special about what you do, why, how you got involved in your line of work, etc.?

A: I grew up in the business. I knew what I was going to do business wise. I enjoy every day not being the same as yesterday. I love meeting new customers, friends and just like the randomness of each new day.

Q: How do you find your work/life balance?

A: I definitely need to have more balance between work and private life.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

A: I have eight grandchildren and love living close to them and enjoying their company frequently.

Q: Would you like to mention anything else about family for this issue of the magazine?

A: I have three children and each one is very involved in a different facet of my business. My wife Donna and I have been married for 46 years and have always worked closely together.

John Webb

Q: What makes living and working in the Southlake area special for you?

A: I love the family and Christian values that are apparent in the community. I have lived in and around the Northeast Tarrant County area since 1986 and have enjoyed being a part of its development and growth.

Q: What do you most enjoy about your work, and would you like to mention anything special about what you do, why, how you got involved in your line of work, etc.?

A: My dad was a builder, so I have grown up in the industry. We are truly a custom homebuilder. We start out working with an architect and a blank sheet of paper. I love all aspects of custom homebuilding from the floor plan design, through the structural construction, installing the finishes and putting the final touches on a beautiful custom home.

Q: How do you find your work/life balance?

A: I try to enjoy a good work/life balance but find myself thinking about my work more often than not. Building homes has been part of my life for so long that I find that the world I’ve created for myself has at least a little bit of my work in all aspects of it.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

A: I enjoy going out to dinner with friends. I enjoy boating, going on vacations with family and friends, staying healthy and going to the gym. I also enjoy going on golf trips with my friends, spending a week in the Rocky Mountains during the summer, and beach vacations.

Q: Would you like to mention anything about family for this issue of the magazine?

A: My family is very important to me. I enjoy the love that we have for each other and know that we all support each other through good times and bad.
