As the sun sets over an updated home off Burnet Road, guests begin to arrive, their laughter and conversation gradually filling the open-concept dining and kitchen area. The hosts, relaxed and at ease, mingle with their friends, tend to their children and savor a well-earned drink. There’s a sense of calm and connection in the air, a feeling that every detail is being thoughtfully handled.

In the midst of this warm gathering, Chef Blake Calfin quietly works his culinary magic. He had arrived an hour before, his arms full of carefully selected groceries, each item chosen with purpose. Dressed in an army green chef’s jacket and sporting a fresh haircut, Calfin is the embodiment of quiet professionalism.

As the evening unfolds, he moves through his prep work with practiced precision, crossing off tasks on his to-do list with a disciplined focus. His vintage knives, meticulously maintained, slice through ingredients as he tastes and adjusts the flavors, all while the lively chatter around him grows louder. Yet his concentration remains unbroken—a testament to his years of experience.

At last, Calfin presents beautiful platters of Shrimp Ceviche with Plantain Chips and Scallop Aquachile Tostaditas. The guests, unable to resist, eagerly help themselves, returning for seconds and thirds, their enjoyment palpable.

When it’s time to gather around the dinner table, Calfin takes a moment to explain the concept of cocinar en caldo, or “cooking in broth.” His voice is calm and inviting as he describes how the guests will immerse fresh vegetables, meats, and seafood into a Latin-inspired broth, allowing the ingredients to cook to perfection before being served over fragrant Jasmine rice.

“I wanted to feature a cornucopia of what Austin has to offer,” Calfin shares, his passion for local flavors evident. “This style of cooking is fun for everyone and slows the pace of the meal, allowing the guests to spend more time together.”

This is just one of the many unique experiences Calfin offers through ATX Chefs, an Austin-based service that specializes in creating unforgettable private chef experiences for special occasions and corporate events, typically for groups of eight to 25 people.

The process begins with a visit to atxchefs.com, where clients can browse the services and menus. After booking a call to discuss the event’s details, clients receive a personalized menu and quote, ensuring every aspect of the evening is tailored to their vision. Once the deposit is secured, all the planning and execution is taken care of, allowing the hosts to focus on what truly matters—cherishing time with their guests.

“The experience lets hosts tend to their guests,” Calfin says, a gentle smile forming. “I do it because I like to care for people and serve people.”
