The Round Mound of Spirits

Charles Barkley’s Vodka Takes the Court

In a half-court offense, Charles Barkley could fill it up from the paint or the perimeter. And on the defensive end, he played the passing lane for a steal or blocked a center's shot. His downright dominating demeanor earned him the nickname Sir Charles, and we caught up with the Round Mound of Rebound who calls the Valley home.

“Living in Arizona is like living among family. Plus, you can wear sandals in December,” says the guy twice dubbed the All-Star Game MVP with the Phoenix Suns.

Barkley is a two-time inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for his individual career and as a member of the 1992 Olympic "dream team." The basketball superstar is also loved and adored as an analyst on TNT's popular studio show, Inside the NBA. However, Sir Charles has another baby besides basketball: Redmont Vodka, what he says is the smoothest sipper on the market.

“As the owner of Redmont Vodka, I’m all about a premium small batch spirit. Plus, it’s made by Redmont Distilling Company in Birmingham, Alabama, my hometown.”

According to insiders at Redmont, having Charles own and represent the brand is extremely rewarding.

“Charles, a great friend of mine, epitomizes a savvy businessman who possesses a keen sense of direction, meticulous attention to detail, and a thorough response style. Barkley's acumen and professionalism make collaborating with him both engaging and enriching,” says Montal Morton, President of Redmont Vodka.

Barkley’s vodka is 8x distilled, non-GMO and gluten free. There's also Vulcan Gin, made from corn, with no harsh aftertaste. The spirits are available in restaurants, bars, and liquor stores throughout the country.

“I love cruising to my neighborhood Zipps where they offer Redmont. I watch the games, hang with friends, and down a cheeseburger paired with my drink of choice,” says Charles.

And his choice is simple: Redmont and cranberry, heavy on the vodka pour.

“It’s a clean taste and better for your body. It simply tastes good.”

We played some interview one-on-one with the legendary vodka owner, asking Barkley some fun questions about all the things.

If you could go one-on-one with any NBA icon, who would it be?

Tim Duncan in his prime.

Who would win?

Me, of course.

Tips for young kids hoping to break into the basketball biz?

This is what I tell kids all over the country: focus on your academics. You have a better chance of being a doctor, lawyer, teacher, policeman, or plumber than an NBA player. I’ve donated millions to HBCUs helping to encourage kids to prioritize schooling first.

During your time in the NBA, you experienced playing with guys much bigger. What was that like?

Yes, I was 6’4 and chunky, but I had to get in basketball shape... and I worked hard. I stayed at it. I had a gift and maximized my gift.

Favorite memory playing pro.

I enjoyed the locker room, hanging out, and talking to the guys. I miss the comradery catching up on family, sports and whatever was going on at the time. The locker room banter and friendship meant everything.

Idols? Mentors?

Bill Russell was my idol; Moses Malone was my mentor.

As we embark on the NBA season, what teams get you the most excited?

That’s a trick question- I’m an analyst.

Ok... but with your connection to the Suns, any tips for our local guys?

Stay the course.

Why do you love being an analyst?

It’s gratifying, fun and I feel honored people value my honest opinions.

You use for celebrity for good and take your vodka along with you. Tell us about that.

I support women in business and admire female entrepreneurs. I also love anyone who serves for the better of our communities- police, firemen, teachers, and my passion is the military. In fact, I value visiting military bases around the country for Redmont Vodka bottle signings. Such experiences are very fulfilling.

Hobbies outside basketball?

Golfing, a good cigar, and my happy hour regimen over cran-and-Redmont.

What’s it like working with Shaq?

We’re like oil and vinegar, but brothers.

Biggest accomplishment?

Being a granddad.
