The Smile Architect

Dr. David Kam and his team are redefining what it means to feel truly cared for — one smile at a time.

For David Kam, DDS, dentistry has always been about more than clinical skill. It’s about trust, relationships and treating people the way you would want to be treated yourself. That philosophy has guided him for more than three decades and shaped the growth of Lifetime Dental (lifetimedentalgroup.com), now serving patients with locations in West Bloomfield, Canton and South Lyon.

“I started dentistry 30 years ago, from scratch,” Kam says. “We focused on great customer care and doing the best dentistry at the best price. By doing that, we grew tremendously.”

That growth was intentional. Rather than expanding quickly or cutting corners, Kam built Lifetime Dental on consistency and quality, using top-tier materials, working with trusted Michigan-based dental labs and investing in advanced technology and  training for his team — including general dentists David Banooni, Robin Bernard, Kevin Malerman, Jasmine Sesi and periodontist Shabnam Behdin.

Aware that dental care often begins with hesitation, the practice prioritizes comfort and trust to transform each visit into a positive experience.

“It is rewarding because our patients say ‘wow, this is so much better than I was anticipating’,” he says. “A successful case is one where expectations are exceeded, not just met.”

Nowhere is that philosophy more evident than at Lifetime Dental’s West Bloomfield location, the practice’s largest and most comprehensive office. Kam, a West Bloomfield resident for more than 50 years, has deep roots in the community. He attended local schools and has cared for generations of families who return not just as patients, but as advocates.

That commitment to preservation and personalized care is supported by Lifetime Dental’s integrated, team-based approach.

“What really makes our offices special is our team,” Kam says. “From the front desk to our hygienists and assistants, these are experienced professionals. Many have been with us for 10 or even 20 years.”

A standout member of that team is board-certified periodontist Shabnam Behdin, DDS, whose work has become a cornerstone of the West Bloomfield practice. Behdin is one of the few periodontists in the area offering advanced laser gum surgery, a minimally invasive alternative to traditional periodontal procedures.

“Laser treatment is much less aggressive and far more comfortable for patients,” Behdin says.

Traditional gum surgery typically involves cutting the gums, removing infected tissue and placing stitches. Laser-assisted procedures, such as LANAP, use focused light energy to remove infection and bacteria without scalpels or sutures, resulting in faster healing, reduced bleeding and significantly less post-operative discomfort.

“With laser treatment, we don’t cut the gums or place stitches,” Behdin, who is certified by the American Board of Periodontology, explains. “It’s a closed approach, and recovery is much easier.”

The benefits are both clinical and personal. Healing often occurs within 24 to 48 hours, with minimal need for pain medication. Behdin estimates that more than 80 percent of patients with gum disease are good candidates for laser treatment, which can also be used to address inflammation or infection around dental implants.

Other periodontal treatments include laser therapy to treat a variety of gum and dental implant diseases, dental implants for the replacement of missing teeth, gum recession and grafting.

Beyond technology, Behdin shares Lifetime Dental’s deeply human-centered philosophy.

“Patients’ welfare, needs and satisfaction are fundamental,” she says. “Education is key. When patients understand their options, they feel empowered and confident in their care.”

That sense of confidence, rooted in expertise, compassion and long-term relationships, is what defines Lifetime Dental. Whether patients are seeking a cosmetic smile makeover, advanced periodontal care or routine preventive services, the experience is designed to feel personal, seamless and reassuring.

As Kam puts it, “We want patients to feel comfortable, understood and confident that they’re receiving the best care possible. That’s what Lifetime Dental is built on.”
