In a world that celebrates more, the most disciplined men are choosing less. It is a shift that is subtle yet powerful, one that has less to do with fashion and more to do with focus. For high-performing men, the idea of a personal wardrobe “uniform” is not about limitation. It is about clarity. At Richards Bespoke, founder Stephen Richards Jr. has seen firsthand how simplifying what a man wears can transform how he moves through his day.

“A personal uniform is a way to express your individual style by wearing what makes you feel most comfortable,” Richards says. “You’re not concerned with following trends, but rather staying in your lane to make your decisions easier when getting ready.” It sounds simple, but the impact is anything but. Every day is filled with decisions, especially for leaders, business owners, and entrepreneurs. Reducing even a handful of those choices creates more space for focus where it actually matters.

“By narrowing down your personal style and wearing only what makes you feel comfortable and confident, this eliminates many unneeded decisions when getting ready each day,” he says. “Instead of having dozens of garments that are reserved for ‘I might wear this one day’, you utilize 100% of what’s in your closet.”

That shift from excess to intention is something Richards sees again and again. The men he works with are not trying to reinvent their look every morning. They are building systems that allow them to move quickly and confidently. “Most men want to be able to get ready in the morning with the lights off,” he says. “Meaning they want to be able to reach for any sport coat, slack, shirt, socks, and shoes without having to worry about if they go together. This helps maximize efficiency by minimizing decision making.”

It is not just about matching colors or patterns. One of the biggest pain points in most closets is inconsistency, pieces that technically look good but do not work together because the fit is off or the proportions are slightly different. “We assist our clients with building out a wardrobe where everything is meant to mix and match,” Richards says.

Stephen notes the word “effortless” comes up often. And it is closely tied to confidence. When everything fits the way it should and works the way it is supposed to, there is no second-guessing. “Ask anyone who has ever had a suit custom-made for them, and they’ll confirm the boost of confidence it’s accompanied by,” Richards says. “When your garments are specifically made to your exact dimensions, you’re provided with not only a perfect fit, but you’re also styled in a way that makes you feel comfortable and confident.”

Still, a uniform does not mean boring. It means intentional. There is room for personality, but within a framework that keeps things streamlined. “We try to keep our clients within or around their comfort zone when it comes to designing their garments instead of pushing trends or what we think they should wear,” he says. “Some guys want to stick to navy and grey when it comes to suiting because it’s easy for them to pair everything with, and that’s OK.”.

The goal? Fewer pieces, better made, worn more often. “Before I started Richards Bespoke, I used to pride myself in how many suits and dress shirts I had hanging in my closet until I realized all I was doing was collecting,” Richards says. “Instead of seeking out deals or purchasing without intention, why not invest the same amount of money in fewer garments that are custom-made for you that you know you’ll wear?”

In the end, the uniform mindset is not really about clothing. It is about discipline. It is about removing friction, creating consistency, and showing up the same way every day, clear, confident, and focused. Because sometimes the smartest way to move forward is not by adding more, but by refining what is already there.
