When you hear the word “consignment,” what do you wish people understood about what it really means, especially when it comes to luxury and designer pieces?
“Consignment” doesn’t necessarily mean used or old. Someone is passing along a treasure they no longer see themselves wearing or enjoying. While some pieces are pre-owned, many are in impeccable condition, and some are even brand new with original tags. What makes fine consignment special is the opportunity to discover one-of-a-kind pieces by high-end designers that may no longer be available in stores. There is something exciting about finding a beautiful piece that feels distinctive and personal. It’s a chance to own a piece of fashion history!
Your shop carries vintage and one-of-a-kind handbags from designers like Chanel, Gucci, Fendi, and Louis Vuitton. What is it about these pieces that makes them stand the test of time?
These brands are known for their classic and timeless designs that transcend seasonal trends. With signature elements that are instantly recognizable, they create a sense of identity and exclusivity. Collaborations with artists and celebrities keep them relevant and aspirational. Designer handbags evoke a strong emotional connection by representing sophistication, elegance, and status. Owning a piece from one of these iconic houses can feel like a personal milestone. And there is always a little thrill in finding that special piece at a price that makes it possible to bring home.
When a designer handbag comes through your door, what are you looking for before deciding it belongs in your shop? What are your criteria for accepting a piece?
The handbag must be authentic. We work with experts to verify the authenticity of designer pieces and ensure they meet the appropriate standards. The handbag should also be in excellent condition. This includes minimal signs of wear, no significant scratches, tears, or stains, and intact hardware and stitching. Bags that are brand new or very gently used are preferred.
Your shop is about appreciating what already exists. What are you most grateful for when a special handbag finds a new home with someone who will love it all over again?
I am profoundly grateful when an amazing designer handbag finds its way to us, brought in by an owner who truly understands its worth and has cherished its exquisite craftsmanship. Some of these handbags hold cherished memories of special occasions where they were proudly worn. These owners, recognizing the meticulous artistry that the designer infused into the piece, are committed to preserving its value. They entrust it to us, appreciating the potential it holds to captivate another’s heart and stand as a testament to a timeless era.
You’re also known for helping customers complete a look. What do you enjoy most about helping someone find that perfect statement piece?
Creative expression! We love watching someone transform and see how the right pieces can elevate their appearance and mood. Helping someone discover a look that makes them feel confident and empowered can have a lasting positive impact on their self-image. Every styling session is an opportunity to celebrate and highlight what makes each person unique, using fashion as a tool for self-expression. One of my favorite quotes by Marc Jacobs says it all: “Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them.”
What’s your go-to evening look for the holidays?
Give me a sequin top in a rich color, black trousers, classic designer pumps, statement earrings, a clutch, and a tailored or fur coat. Holiday fashion is about feeling confident, having fun, and wearing something that makes you feel beautiful.
If you could change one misconception about buying consignment, what would it be—and what would you say to someone who has never stepped inside your shop?
Misconception: that consignment shops are filled with outdated or worn items. In reality, you can find a selection of high-quality pieces that rival what you would find in traditional retail stores. I would tell someone visiting for the first time to come with an open mind. You may find something completely unexpected that speaks to your personal style. Plus, shopping consignment is a sustainable choice, allowing you to enjoy luxury fashion while also being environmentally conscious. Our shop is full of treasures ready to be given new life. After all, “Renaissance” means rebirth or revival, which perfectly captures the spirit of what we do.
When you think about your shop, the people you’ve met, and your life in El Dorado Hills, what are you most thankful for?
Owning Renaissance and living in El Dorado Hills comes with many blessings, and one of the greatest is the opportunity to work with and employ incredibly artistic individuals. Their creativity and passion bring something special to my life every day. They contribute fresh ideas and unique perspectives that not only enhance the shop's atmosphere but also fuel my own passion for fashion and community.
