It wasn’t a business plan or a desire to build a career that inspired Stephanie Webb and Lindsay McMullin to open Mimi and Coco but a simple question, “Where in St. George is there to shop?”. After a family trip to Italy, enjoying the sights, sounds, food and of course shopping, Lindsay and Stephanie felt inspired to bring a little of that high quality clothing and toys to our community.
The Mother-In-Law and Daughter-In-Law duo began their first store with racks that they assembled themselves, rugs thrown on the floor and a stock of clothing they had curated on purchase trips. They knew that Santa Clara was the right vibe for their fledgling store. When the right pioneer property came available, the vision for their store really came into a clear view. With a temporary store front on Santa Clara Drive while their permanent location was being remodeled, they began providing products and advice that has endeared them to the community.
“Our brands are sustainable. They're almost all 100 percent certified cotton or made with non-toxic materials, something you don't get when you shop at a big box store, and you also don't get unique, fun items.” Beyond the natural materials, the details of smocking, collars and bits of embroidery create a timelessness for these unique pieces.
Stephanie and Lindsay understand their customer bases’ desire to stand out in a comfortable way. “We put thought into our clothing when we go out, whether it is to a restaurant or even to Grandma’s house, and we want that thoughtfulness to be reflected in our children’s clothing as well.” We have our phones in hand all the time and “every time you leave the house with your kids it is a photo opportunity.” Making those moments precious is something we can and should prioritize.
A personal connection to their customers is a high priority to Lindsay and Stephanie. They receive countless messages on Instagram asking questions and requesting products. They are excited to hear when a customer’s grandbaby has arrived and reached milestones. A reputation of a personal connection with their customers drives their business.
Heirloom clothing seems to be coming back into fashion with the youngest generation. Clothing that won’t just be passed from sibling to sibling but from Mother to daughter. “Many grandmothers comment about our clothing saying, ‘This looks like clothing from when I was little, or this looks like what I used to put on my kids’ almost like they've again found the specialness and the quality, and even the styles that went away for a while.”
