Between helping lead HUGOS Barbershop, building H&S Cattle Co., raising their son Bryan, and working toward several family business ventures, Stacy and Hugo Corral have plenty to keep them busy. That's part of the reason their miniature cattle have become such an important part of family life.
Raised around cattle by her grandmother, Stacy always had a special connection to them. As life became busier, miniature cattle offered something unexpected: a reason to slow down.
Their miniature cattle—Nelo, Roberto, and Pablo—each have personalities of their own.
"Nelo is our big baby," Stacy said. "Roberto is our little rebel, and Pablo is the calm, gentle soul of the group."
While visitors often expect farm animals to be distant or shy, Stacy said miniature cattle are surprisingly affectionate and interactive. They recognize vehicles, know when it's feeding time, and aren't shy about asking for attention—or snacks.
The cattle are especially popular with the family's nieces, nephews, and other young visitors.
"Once they warm up to them, it's like having a giant petting zoo in the backyard," Stacy said.
One of the family's favorite memories came shortly after bringing Nelo home. The adventurous steer escaped and led the family on a chase across six acres.
"It was exhausting at the time," Stacy said, "but now it's one of our favorite family memories."
Although miniature cattle are smaller than traditional cattle, they still require daily care, training, and attention. For the Corral family, however, the rewards far outweigh the work.
"If you're looking for something that helps you slow down and enjoy life a little more, a miniature cow might be the perfect fit," Stacy said. "They're like big puppies with a lot of personality and even bigger hearts."
