The Women Who Make it Happen Share Tips for Elegant Entertaining

There are those who throw a swell party. And then there are those who could teach a master class in entertaining.

These three Tucson women fall in the latter category.

Cecile Follansbee, Coppélia Samaha and Jeannette Segel are far more than social doyens and party givers, they are masterminds of how to create a party that elicits just the right reaction from their guests. Whether it’s a chic soiree for 10 in their home, a festive reception for 40, or chairing a charity gala for 500, they get it. Better than anyone. And as we enter the holiday season, we were lucky enough to have them share some tips on how to make any seasonable gathering special, merry and bright!

Finish this sentence. I believe the 3 most important elements of any successful party are________.

CF: Have a reason or theme or purpose for the event.  Offer something that will be different and unique -- entertainment, speaker, artist? Keep the size of the group personable and purposeful.

CS: Invite the right people. Make it unforgettable by having the most stunning decorations, food and music playing for guests. I always request my guests dress to impress!

JS: A congenial group of guests, plenty of tasty food and a large supply of wine and spirits.

How would you define your personal entertaining style?

CF: Casual elegance, joyous, fun

CS: Elegant, that’s my personal style

JS: My favorite is informal and outdoors

Are you a DIY hostess, or do you utilize external vendors, i.e. caterers, florist and/or party planners?

CF: Depends, but for larger groups, I utilize external vendors

CS: I do absolutely everything, including cooking and decorating. I only hire the Symphony for a memorable Christmas party. Our Concertmaster Laure Roth chooses and plays her favorite symphonic pieces. She makes our celebrations unforgettable.

JS: It's DIY definitely for a dinner party but I always use a caterer for larger parties.  Generally, I will put together my own floral arrangements.

Did you have a role model who influenced you in developing your event planning self-confidence and expertise?

CF: Not really, I just learned from a broad sample of friends, magazines, social media, etc.

CS:  My mom, she was an elegant lady and had the most beautiful way of entertaining.

JS:  A number of my friends are my role models.  They are incredible in the kitchen and great organizers.

These talented and gifted desert hostesses set the bar high for entertaining any time of year. Allow them to inspire you this holiday season!
