Johnson Memorial Health Earns Another “A” Hospital Safety Grade From The Leapfrog Group

Johnson Memorial Health recently earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog group in Washington, D.C., whose representatives focus on patient safety.

Leapfrog staffers assign an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the United States, using evidence-based measures of patient safety determined exclusively on errors, accidents, Leapfrog injuries and infections.

“An ‘A’ grade from The Leapfrog Group is a reflection of the culture of safety we’ve built here at Johnson Memorial Health,” says David Dunkle, MD, JMH president and CEO. “Every member of our team, whether they provide direct patient care or support those who do, plays a role in keeping our patients safe. This recognition affirms our goal of putting patients first and doing what’s right for those who trust us with their care.”

JMH encompasses a nationally recognized network of physicians, services and health care resources. The group’s hospital in Franklin has served patients as the county’s only full-service hospital since 1947.

This medical staff expanded to serve patients at locations including Greenwood, Whiteland and the Center Grove area. In 2022, JMH became a member of the prestigious Mayo Clinic Care Network, providing patients with local access to the knowledge and expertise of the world-renowned Mayo Clinic.

“Earning an ‘A’ Grade means Johnson Memorial Health made a true commitment to put patient safety first,” confirms Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the leadership, board of trustees, clinicians, staff and volunteers that all had a role to play in this achievement.”

This is the third national honor JMH earned for quality and patient safety in approximately the last year.

During November of 2024, JMH also earned an ‘A’ safety grade from the Leapfrog group, one of only a few Indiana hospitals to earn the highest mark. Additionally, JMH achieved a 5-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, placing it in the top 10.1% of hospitals nationwide.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
