Since 2004, over 150 children in grades K-12 with intellectual, emotional or physical disabilities have developed their soccer skills in a safe, fun and supportive environment with TOPSoccer: The Outreach Program for Soccer, a national program offered through local clubs.
The group recently celebrated its 20th anniversary at Rotary Fields. Past participants and mentors were invited to take part.
TOPSoccer brings together players and peer mentors who serve as buddies and have numbered more than 400 since the program’s inception. These special athletes play at levels consistent with their skills.
Founded by Marty and Jen Carroll as part of the town’s Hartwell Soccer Club, the program is now run by Coach Justin Kelleher.
“TOPS is a unique opportunity for kids of all backgrounds, abilities, and experiences to come together, have fun, and be active,” he says. “It is also an opportunity for families to connect, share, and support each other. Players, peer mentors, and families have all made lifetime friends through the program and we all look forward to TOPS Saturday afternoons each fall and spring!”
Players’ parents also have the opportunity to meet and share their unique yet similar experiences.
“TOPSoccer has given our daughter Nicole and our family the opportunity to establish meaningful connections with other special needs families, children and volunteers,” said Katherine Sisa-Lamb. “It is an outlet where our daughter participates at her own pace, and where she is encouraged by her friends, adults and peer mentors.
"It's such an amazing program," adds Mike DeFosses, the father of twin players. "It brings all kinds of kids together and gets them outside with peer mentors, and allows the parents to be able to meet each other and connect.”
"It's fun meeting new people.” says his son Jake. His brother, Tyler, is more specific: “I like kicking the ball, playing Duck, Duck, Goose, and the popsicles,” he says.
