Are you looking to transform your garage? Upgrading your garage floor with a polyurea coating can transform your garage from a dull, utilitarian space to a vibrant, highly functional area. Chase Straight and his team at Polytek Surface Coatings can transform your garage in a day with a beautiful and functional polyurea floor. Not only does Polytek, a family-owned company, transform garages, but they can also transform basements, laundry rooms, home gyms and patios.
Polyurea is known for its extreme flexibility and durability. Polyurea flooring can take a tremendous amount of abuse because it is malleable and can take physical impacts and disperse them, much like the rubber on a car tire. The flexibility of the polyurea enables the floor to expand and contract with the concrete underneath, which is critical in our Minnesota climate. When compared to epoxy floor coatings, polyurea floor coatings are stronger, more chemically resistant to a wide range of chemicals, and can take a tremendous amount of wear and tear. Polyurea floors are also available in a wide variety of finishes and colors to enhance your space.
According to Chase, the preparation of the garage and the installation of the floor can be completed in a day. The hardest part for most people is getting all their belongings out of the garage, but this also provides a wonderful opportunity to go through years of clutter and reorganize their garage into a more usable space.
The first step is for the floor to be profiled with a grinder, which helps to extend the life of the floor by giving it the greatest adhesion possible to the existing floor below. The grinding process removes contaminants, sealers, and existing coatings, and opens the pores of the concrete. At this point, any cracks in the existing floor will be filled and ground flat, and then the floor will be vacuumed. A basecoat of polyurea is applied to the floor, and then the floor is fully covered with polymer flake to give it the desired appearance. The basecoat is allowed to dry for 60 to 90 minutes, and then the floor is scraped to remove loose flakes before being vacuumed to make sure there are no loose flakes on the floor. The final step is the application of the clear topcoat. The floor can be walked on six to eight hours later; after 24 hours, you can park on your new garage floor.
Maintaining the floor is easy, since it is non-porous and stain resistant. Regular cleaning with a broom and periodically mopping the floor with a microfiber mop and diluted Simple Green will keep the floor looking its best.
A new polyurea floor will enhance your garage’s appearance. The variety of colors and finishes available will allow the look to be customized to match well with your home. A polyurea floor will boost the usability and aesthetic of your garage.
